Application for Principal, Northfield High School

Dear Dr. Barrineau,

I am applying for the Principal post at Northfield High School. I hold a North Carolina School Administrator License and currently lead a 2,100-student comprehensive campus with 142 staff and a $16.4M budget, an assignment that became a growth assignment when a 2023 boundary redraw added 340 students in a single year.

Before Lakeshore I took Greenbriar Elementary as a state-identified low-performing school with 31% annual teacher turnover. Reading proficiency moved from 32% to 58% and math from 29% to 61% over four years, and the school left identification in year three. The part I care about most is that turnover fell to 12% and the results held for three years after I moved, because a gain that leaves with the principal was never a system.

Northfield has had three principals in six years and is opening a second career and technical education wing next fall. Those two facts are connected, and the first thing I would work on is the assistant principal bench, since the fastest way to make a result durable is to build the people who will still be there. I have developed three assistant principals into principalships.

My license is current through 2030 and I can start with the July contract. I am looking for a post I can stay in for at least five years, and I would want the conversation to test that. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Obiageli Nwosu, Ed.S.

Summary

A principal cover letter names the kind of school you inherited, one measured change with a baseline and a period, and the administrator license that lets a board appoint you. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, what changes between a turnaround post and a high-performing one, and the tenure question every search committee is quietly asking.

Principal cover letter examples by experience level

A principal cover letter is a one-page letter that tells a search committee what kind of school you inherited, what you measurably changed there, and which administrator license lets a board appoint you.

The committee is not reading for vision. They are reading for match. They have a school with a condition attached to it, and they want to know whether you have run one like it and stayed long enough for the result to hold.

Guide to a principal cover letter

This guide and the corresponding principal cover letter example will cover:

  • How to structure the letter, paragraph by paragraph
  • Why the assignment you inherited belongs in the first paragraph
  • What a measured result looks like with a baseline attached
  • Turnaround, stable and growth posts, and how the letter changes
  • The tenure question every search committee is quietly asking

Expert Tip

Name the assignment before you name the result

A number without a starting condition is not evidence. "Raised proficiency to 58%" could describe a triumph or a slide, and a committee reading twenty files will not guess in your favor.

Write the condition first: "I took Greenbriar as a state-identified low-performing school with 31% annual teacher turnover." Then the movement: "reading proficiency moved from 32% to 58% over four years and turnover fell to 12%."

The order matters because the condition is what tells the reader whether your experience matches their vacancy. A committee filling a turnaround wants a turnaround record. A committee filling a high-performing school is more worried about breakage than growth, and needs to hear that you can steward as well as fix.

What counts as evidence

Pick one school and one thread. A letter that lists every result reads as a resume with paragraph breaks.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence
Achievement with a baselineReading proficiency moved from 32% to 58% over four years
Accountability statusThe school left state low-performing identification in year three
StaffingTeacher turnover fell from 31% to 12% a year
DurabilityResults held for three years after I moved schools
OperationsAbsorbed 340 additional students without adding a period to the day
People builtDeveloped three assistant principals into principalships

Durability is the one almost nobody claims, and it is the most persuasive sentence available to you. If your gains survived your departure, say so.

Turnaround, stable and growth posts

Do

Name the assignment type of the post you are applying to as well as the ones you have held. Give enrollment, staff count and budget so the committee can size you against the vacancy. Put a baseline in front of every number. Read the school's improvement plan and board minutes, which are public, and name one real thing from them. Say plainly how long you intend to stay.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not open with a philosophy of leadership; it delays every fact the committee is looking for. Do not give a result without a starting point. Do not name, initial or describe an individual student, family or staff member, in any example. Do not claim a district initiative as your school result. Do not apply to a high-performing school with a letter that is entirely about fixing things.

Statistical insight

Almost every vacancy is a replacement, so tenure is the quiet question

Principal employment is projected to change 0% from 2025 to 2035, yet about 20,600 openings a year are expected, nearly all from principals leaving the post, against 343,800 jobs in 2025 and a median annual wage of $105,870 in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025-35 projections).

Federal survey data shows the churn directly: of public school principals in 2020 to 2021, about 80% were at the same school a year later, 6% had moved schools and 11% had left the profession (National Center for Education Statistics, National Teacher and Principal Survey, July 2023). National average tenure in a school was four years, with 35% of principals in post under two years (Learning Policy Institute and NASSP, March 2019).

The committee reading your letter has almost certainly just lost a principal. One sentence about how long you intend to stay, and why this post rather than the next rung, does more work than a paragraph about your leadership style.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. PDF unless the district portal says otherwise, named for yourself and the post: obiageli-nwosu-principal-cover-letter.pdf.

Address the superintendent or the named search contact. Board minutes and district sites carry these names, and "Dear Search Committee" on an otherwise specific file reads as a letter sent to twelve districts.

Use the same figures as your resume so the two agree. Our principal resume example is written with the numbers used here.

Key takeaways

  1. Name the assignment you inherited before you name the result.
  2. Put your license, enrollment, staff count and budget in the first paragraph.
  3. Give one school, one baseline, one endpoint and one period.
  4. Say whether the gains held after you left.
  5. Name one real thing from their improvement plan or board minutes.
  6. Answer the tenure question before they ask it.
  7. Address a named person and keep it to one page.

Principal cover letter questions, answered

How long should a principal cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. Slightly longer than a teaching letter, because scope and assignment type both have to fit, but never two pages. The leadership portfolio is where detail belongs, and most districts ask for one at interview.

Should I write a philosophy of leadership in the letter?

No. Districts that want one ask for it as a separate document, usually at the interview stage, and it is a better piece of writing when it is not competing with the facts. The letter's job is match: the assignment, the scope, the measured change and the license.

How do I apply to a high-performing school when my record is turnaround work?

Address it directly in the fit paragraph. A committee filling a strong school is worried about breakage, so name what you protected as well as what you fixed: staff you retained and promoted, systems you left standing, results that held after you moved. Then say what you would not change in the first year.

What if I have had short tenures?

Explain them in one clause each, without defensiveness, and put the reason in the open. Promotions, district reassignments, school closures and mergers are common and unremarkable. National average tenure in a school was four years, and 35% of principals had been in post under two years (Learning Policy Institute and NASSP, March 2019), so the pattern is familiar. What a committee cannot accept is an unexplained gap or a sequence they have to guess at.

Do I need a cover letter if the district uses an application portal?

Attach one wherever there is a field for it. The portal collects the same structured fields from every candidate and cannot tell a committee what kind of school you inherited or whether the result held after you left. That is the whole argument for your candidacy, and the letter is the only place it fits.
