Mechanical Engineer resume examples by experience level

A mechanical engineer resume is a one to two page document that says where in the product lifecycle you work, what you have released, and what evidence you can produce that it worked.

That first item is the one most resumes leave out, and it is the one the reader needs first. A design engineer, an analysis engineer and a manufacturing engineer all hold the same degree and use overlapping software, but they are hired by three different managers who want three different kinds of proof. Design managers want released parts and tolerance decisions. Analysis managers want correlated models. Manufacturing managers want scrap, cycle time and launch dates. Send the wrong evidence and a strong file reads as a near miss.

How to write a mechanical engineer resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, engineering experience, technical skills, education, and certifications. One page for your first five years, two once you have released products, run programs, or carried a launch.

Mechanical engineering has no single gate the way power engineering has the PE, so the header does more work. Your title line has to state the lifecycle position, and your skills block has to prove you already run the stack the hiring team runs.

Name the drawing standard, not just the CAD package

Saying you know SolidWorks tells a reader you attended university. Saying you dimension to ASME Y14.5 tells them you have been through a print review.

ASME Y14.5 is the dimensioning and tolerancing standard behind almost every mechanical drawing released in the United States, and ASME certifies against it at two levels. The Technologist level measures competency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and carries no experience requirement. The Senior level measures the ability to select and apply geometric controls to drawings and requires three years, or 36 months, of documented GD&T experience. Both exams are 150 scored multiple choice questions, closed book, against either the 2009 or the 2018 revision of the standard (ASME, accessed September 2026).

If you hold either level, put it in the header. If you do not, put the practice on the page anyway: "ran tolerance stack-ups on a 14-part assembly and moved three datums to release the tool" is the same claim with proof attached.

Choosing the best resume format for a mechanical engineer resume

Reverse chronological. One page until you have five or six years, two once you carry program responsibility.

Mechanical careers often move between lifecycle positions, and the temptation is a skills-first layout that hides the moves. Do the opposite. Label each move in the job title itself, because a reader who can see you went from design to manufacturing and back reads an engineer who understands both. A reader who cannot see it reads a gap.

The second and third lines do the routing. "Mechanical Engineer" could mean anything from HVAC load calculations to turbine blade fatigue. "Mechanical Design Engineer, Driveline Components" cannot.

Say where in the product lifecycle you sit, and prove it

This is the section that decides a mechanical engineering job search, and almost no resume states it outright.

Mechanical engineers do not compete against each other in general. They compete inside a lifecycle position, and each position has its own evidence, its own tools and its own failure mode on a resume.

Then add the industry, because the regime that governs your work is half of what a hiring manager is buying.

Automotive runs on IATF 16949 with APQP, DFMEA, control plans and PPAP, and a supplier engineer who has never submitted a PPAP package is not yet an automotive engineer. Aerospace runs on AS9100, the quality management requirements standard for aviation, space and defense organizations published by SAE International. Medical devices in the United States now run on the FDA's Quality Management System Regulation, which became effective on 2 February 2026 and amends the device current good manufacturing practice requirements of 21 CFR Part 820 by incorporating ISO 13485:2016 by reference (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, February 2026). Pressure equipment runs on the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. HVAC and building systems run on ASHRAE standards and the mechanical code, and that corner of the field does use the PE.

On licensure: the standard path is an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree, the FE exam, four years of acceptable, progressive and verifiable work experience, and the PE exam (NCEES, accessed September 2026). The PE Mechanical exam comes in three modules, HVAC and Refrigeration, Machine Design and Materials, and Thermal and Fluid Systems, each 80 questions in a nine-hour appointment and each offered year round (NCEES, accessed September 2026). Most product engineers never take it, because manufacturers design under the industrial exemption in state practice acts. Building systems engineers do take it, because their drawings get sealed and permitted.

Do

Put the lifecycle position in the title line and make the rest of the page agree with it. Name the CAD package and the PLM system, because file compatibility is a real hiring criterion. State the drawing standard and its revision year. Give volumes for anything you released, because 300,000 units a year is a different engineering problem from 400. Name the quality regime you released under. Say what a stack-up or a model actually changed.

Do not list every CAD package you have opened; the reader will assume you are competent in none of them. Do not report FEA results without a correlation figure or a test that followed. Do not describe a design role in manufacturing language or the reverse. Do not claim ownership of a whole program when you owned eleven part numbers inside it. Do not leave the industry unnamed, because the regime is the context for every number you give.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 10 or 11 point type, a heading for every section, no photograph, no skills sliders. A slider that says SolidWorks 85 percent communicates nothing; a line that says 210 released part numbers does.

If your work is visual, link one clean portfolio page rather than embedding images. Recruiters at manufacturers open PDFs in a parser first and a viewer second.

Statistical insight

No single industry holds more than a fifth of the occupation

Mechanical engineering is the least concentrated of the large engineering fields. Architectural, engineering and related services employs 20 percent of mechanical engineers, machinery manufacturing 14 percent, transportation equipment manufacturing 10 percent, scientific research and development services 7 percent, and computer and electronic product manufacturing 6 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

That means more than four in ten mechanical engineers work somewhere outside the five largest employers, and it explains why a generic mechanical resume performs so poorly. There is no default employer to write for.

Pay tracks the fragmentation. Scientific research and development services paid a median of $132,040 in May 2025, against $98,620 in machinery manufacturing, a difference of roughly a third for the same job title (BLS, May 2025). Naming your industry and your lifecycle position is how you get read by the column that pays for what you already do.

What salary you can expect as a mechanical engineer

The median annual wage for mechanical engineers was $104,110 in May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $73,990 and the highest 10 percent more than $164,340 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

The spread inside that range is mostly industry and lifecycle position rather than negotiation. Scientific research and development services paid a median of $132,040 while machinery manufacturing paid $98,620 (BLS, May 2025). Analysis and simulation roles with correlated model evidence, and manufacturing engineering roles in regulated industries, both sit above general design work in most markets, because the supply of people who can prove those skills is smaller.

What the resume moves is which of those columns reads you as a fit. A file that states the lifecycle position, names the regime and gives volumes reaches the manager who pays for exactly that. A file that describes a mechanical engineer in general reaches whoever is left.

Do mechanical engineers need a PE license?

Most do not. Product engineering at manufacturers runs under the industrial exemption in state practice acts, so no individual seals the drawings. If you are in product work, list the FE and stop worrying about it.

Which CAD package should I list first?

The one the posting names, if you actually use it. Beyond that, list packages by how recently and how heavily you used them, and name the PLM system alongside. Teams care about file compatibility and release workflow at least as much as about modeling skill, and a candidate who has lived inside Teamcenter or Windchill needs less onboarding.

How do I show analysis work on a resume?

With correlation. A model count on its own proves you own a license. "Ran 46 nonlinear structural models in Ansys Mechanical, correlated to strain gauge test within 8 percent" proves the models were believed. If you have no physical test to correlate against, say what decision the model changed.

What should an entry-level mechanical engineer put on a resume?

Co-ops, internships and capstone work written as jobs: the requirement, the design, the analysis, the build and the measured result. Add your FE result with the month if you sat it, the CAD package you can actually release in, and any GD&T training. A first-year engineer who can produce a dimensioned print to Y14.5 is immediately useful, and very few say whether they can.

Should I list every project I have worked on?

No. List the ones where you can name your own scope and a number that moved. Three bullets with released volumes and a cost or clearance figure beat ten that describe a team's work. If your part of a large program was eleven components, say eleven components inside a program of that size; the honesty reads as judgment.
