For the earliest start date on a job application, give the first day you could really start if they hired you today. Employed? Count two weeks of notice plus a few days of buffer after an offer. Unemployed? "Immediately" or a date one week out works. Students should use their graduation or work-permit date. The field is not a contract, so you can adjust it at the offer stage.
For the earliest start date on job application forms, enter the first day you could start if they made you an offer today. Most employed people type "Two weeks after offer." Free now? Type "Immediately."
That is the short version. But the right answer changes if you are a student, moving cities or stuck with a date picker. This guide gives you the exact words for each case.
Quick answers by situation
| Your situation | What to put | Example line |
|---|---|---|
| Employed, standard notice | Notice plus a few days | "Two weeks after offer acceptance" |
| Unemployed or between jobs | Now, or a week out | "Immediately" |
| Student before graduation | Your graduation or permit date | "June 1, 2027 (after May graduation)" |
| Moving to a new city | Your move date plus setup time | "January 4, 2027, after relocation" |
| Contract with a longer notice | The notice your contract sets | "Four weeks after offer, per my contract" |
| Form forces a calendar date | About three to four weeks from today | Pick a weekday, such as Monday, December 7 |
What should you put for the earliest start date on job application forms?
Put the first realistic day you could start if you got an offer today. If you have a job, that usually means two weeks of notice plus a short buffer, so write "two weeks after offer." If you are free now, write "Immediately." Students and movers should name the date their situation allows.
Hiring teams use this field to plan training and payroll. So they want a true answer, not the most eager one.
The field goes by many names. You may see "Date available," "Available start date," "When can you start?" or "Earliest start date." They all ask the same thing.
Relative answers beat fixed dates
If the field accepts text, a relative answer is safest. "Two weeks after offer" stays true whether the offer comes next week or next month. A fixed date can go stale before anyone reads it.
Career advice writer Alison Green makes the same point at Ask a Manager5. She suggests answering in terms of time after the offer, then saving any real negotiation for when you have the offer in hand.
- Count your noticeCheck your contract or handbook. If neither sets a period, plan on two weeks.
- Add a bufferAdd two to five days for a background check, paperwork or a short break.
- Check fixed datesAdd any graduation, move, visa or vacation date that blocks an earlier start.
- Pick the formatText box: write a relative answer. Date picker: pick a weekday about three to four weeks out.
- Note it in your trackerSave what you typed, so your interview answer matches the form.
How do you work out your start date if you are currently employed?
Start with the notice you owe your current employer. Two weeks is the US custom, but a contract can set more. Then add a few days of buffer for paperwork and checks. Write it as time after the offer, such as "two weeks after offer," so the answer stays accurate whenever the offer arrives.
Two weeks is a custom, not a law, in most US jobs. SHRM's CEO said so plainly in an Ask HR column.

While giving two weeks' notice is customary, you can certainly offer a longer notice period.
Johnny C. Taylor Jr., SHRM, 2021
He also told readers to check any employment contract for a set number of weeks1. So if your contract says four weeks, your answer is four weeks. Our guide to your notice period shows where to find it.
A notice period is an offer, not a contract — in at-will states they can end it the day you resign. Here is how long to give, and how to word it.
Why you should add a buffer
Your old employer might let you go early. SHRM notes that employers are not required to honor a resignation notice period2. But you cannot plan on that.
So add a few days. Background checks, drug tests and new hire forms take time, and a short gap also lets you rest between jobs.
Earliest start date: Two weeks after offer acceptance Note (if there is a comments box): I will give my current employer two weeks' notice once I accept an offer.
You are not alone in switching
Lots of people work out this math each month. The BLS counted 3.4 million quits in September 20263, a quits rate of 2.1%. Many of those workers had to give notice and set a new start date.
When you do resign, our 2-week notice letter templates help you write it fast.
What if you are unemployed, a student or relocating?
If you are unemployed, write "Immediately" or a date one week out. Students should give the day after graduation, or the date a work permit begins. If you are moving, give your move date plus a few days to settle in. In each case, explain the date in a short note if the form has room.
Your situation sets the earliest real date. Then the form just needs that date in the right format.

Unemployed or between jobs
"Immediately" is fine and honest. If you want a few days to set up child care or finish a course, write a date one week out instead.
Earliest start date: Immediately Or, if you want a short setup week: Monday, December 7, 2026
Students and new grads
Use the day after your last exam or your graduation. International students on F-1 status have extra limits. USC's international office says students can request an OPT start date no more than 60 days after their program end date4.
The same page says students cannot begin work until they hold the physical EAD card. It also puts USCIS processing at about three to four months. So if you have not filed yet, your earliest start date may sit months out.
Earliest start date: June 1, 2027 Comments: I graduate in May 2027 and can start on my approved OPT start date.
Moving to a new city
Give the date you will live within commuting distance, plus a few days. If the company pays for the move, write "Flexible, two weeks after offer plus relocation." Then talk details at the offer stage.
Recruiters compare the form with what you say on the phone screen. If the form says "Immediately" and you later say "a month," it looks like a change of plan. Save your answer in a job tracker so both match.
Should you type "immediately," a date or "negotiable"?
Type "Immediately" only if you could start this week. Use a relative phrase such as "two weeks after offer" when the field takes text. If the form forces a calendar date, pick a weekday about three to four weeks out. Avoid "negotiable" alone, since it tells the recruiter nothing they can plan around.
The format of the field matters as much as your answer. Application systems let employers choose the question type. Cornerstone's recruiting help, for example, lists a Date question type6 next to short text and multiple choice.
| Field type | What to enter | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Free text | "Two weeks after offer acceptance" | Stays true whenever the offer comes |
| Date picker | A weekday three to four weeks out | Covers interviews, offer and notice |
| Dropdown | The closest honest choice, such as "Within 2 weeks" | You cannot type a note |
| Yes/No ("Can you start immediately?") | "No" if you owe notice | A false "Yes" can cost trust later |
When a date picker forces your hand
A date picker will not take "two weeks after offer." So estimate when an offer could come, then add your notice and buffer. If you apply on Thursday, November 5, 2026, a Monday such as December 7 is a fair pick.
Also look for a comments box or cover letter to explain. One line such as "Date assumes two weeks' notice after an offer" does the job.
Dropdowns with "immediately," "within 7 days" or "next month"
Some forms only offer a few choices, such as "Immediately," "Within 7 days" or "Next month." Pick the one that matches your notice. If you owe two weeks, "Next month" is more honest than "Within 7 days."
Do not confuse start date with shift availability
Some forms also ask which days and hours you can work. Workday, for one, lets employers set up candidate work availability7 as time slots by day. That is your weekly schedule, not your first day.
Do
- Write a relative answer when the field takes text.
- Pick a weekday for date pickers.
- Count notice from your contract, if you have one.
Don’t
- Type "Immediately" when you owe notice.
- Write only "Negotiable" or "TBD."
- Leave the field blank if it is optional.

Can you change your start date later, and does it hurt you?
Yes, you can change it. The earliest start date on job application forms is not a contract, and the real date gets set in the offer. A few weeks of notice rarely hurts, because recruiters expect it. What does hurt is a date you cannot keep, or one that changes without warning after you accept.
Most employers plan for notice. So "two weeks after offer" reads as normal, not slow.
When a later date can cost you
A few roles need someone fast, such as seasonal or temp jobs. In those cases, a date months out may move you down the list. If the posting says "immediate start," apply only if you can come close.
How to change the date after you apply
If your date changes before an offer, tell the recruiter in a short email. Then confirm the final date in writing when you accept.
Subject: Update on my availability, [job title]
Hi [recruiter name],
Thank you again for considering me for the [job title] role. My earliest start date has changed to [new date] because [one short reason].
I am still very interested and happy to discuss timing.
Best, [your name]

What should you say if they push back on your date?
Restate your date, give the reason in one line, and offer one small give, such as doing paperwork early or starting part time. Most recruiters accept two weeks of notice. If they insist on an earlier date, decide before the call whether you would shorten your notice, and never promise a date you cannot keep.
Push back usually happens on the phone screen, not on the form. Plan your answer before the call.
Recruiter: "Your form says two weeks after offer. Could you start next Monday?"
"I want to leave my current team on good terms, so I need to give two weeks' notice."
Recruiter: "We are hoping to fill this before the holidays."
"I understand. I can finish onboarding forms and training videos before day one, so I start ready to work."
What to say if they push back
- Restate the date: "My earliest start is two weeks after I accept."
- Give one reason: "I owe my employer two weeks' notice."
- Offer a small give: "I can complete paperwork before my first day."
- Hold the line: "I would rather start on time than leave my team short."

Give notice only after you have a written offer and any checks have cleared. If you resign early and the offer falls through, you have no job and no start date.
How do you make the rest of your application count?
A clear start date helps, but your resume and cover letter decide the interview. Fill every field honestly, match your resume to the posting, and keep a record of what you wrote. Use role examples to shape your bullets, then tailor each one to the job ad before you hit submit.
The earliest start date on job application forms is one small field. Your resume does most of the work.

Frequently asked questions
What do I put for date available on an application?
Put the first day you could start if hired today. If you work now, write "two weeks after offer." If you are free, write "Immediately."
Is it OK to put "immediately" as my start date?
Yes, if you could start this week. If you owe notice to a current employer, write "two weeks after offer" instead.
Is the start date on a job application binding?
No. The real start date gets set in the offer letter. You can change your date before then, but tell the recruiter as soon as it changes.
What should I pick if the form forces a calendar date?
Pick a weekday about three to four weeks from the day you apply. That covers interviews, the offer and two weeks of notice.
Does a later start date hurt my chances?
Rarely, if it is two to four weeks. Recruiters expect notice. A date months away can hurt for roles that need someone right away.
What should students put for earliest start date?
Put the day after graduation, or your work permit start date if you need one. F-1 students should check their OPT dates first.
