A scholarship resume is a one to two page document that answers, in the sponsor's own order, the criteria the sponsor has already published.
That is the whole difference between this document and a job resume. A hiring manager screens you against a description they wrote last month and never show you in full. A scholarship committee scores you against criteria printed on the program's own website, usually in the same words every year. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation says candidates are evaluated on "their leadership and service records, as well as their likelihood of success in graduate school" (truman.gov, retrieved 17 September 2026). That sentence is not a statement of values. It is a section list, and most applicants never use it as one.
Resume guide for a scholarship resume
This guide and the corresponding scholarship resume example will cover:
- How to write a scholarship resume section by section, in the sponsor's order
- How to turn a published criteria list into the headings on your page
- Three adaptable summaries: early undergraduate, nomination year, and graduate fellowship
- Why the campus nomination round is a separate competition with its own deadline

How to write a scholarship resume
Six blocks: a contact header carrying your class year, a short summary, the criteria sections in the sponsor's order, education with dates and the coursework that supports your plan, awards and funding already received, and a methods line if the program funds research.
The order is the point. A job resume follows a conventional order every reader expects. A scholarship resume follows the order the sponsor gave you, and reordering an already-written file is the cheapest improvement available to you.
BlockWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
- Class year and expected graduationIs this student eligible at all, this cycle?Contact header, first line under the name
- Criteria sectionsDoes this file contain the thing we said we score?Body, in the sponsor's published order
- Awards and fundingHas anyone else already backed this person? Its own block, with amounts and dates
- EducationCan they survive the graduate program we would be funding?Below the criteria, with coursework that proves it
Read the eligibility page before you open a resume template
Most scholarship applications are lost on eligibility rather than on merit, and eligibility is usually a date.
The Truman Scholarship requires candidates to be "in their penultimate year of school (for candidates graduating in four years or more) or in their final year of school (for candidates graduating in three years or fewer)", to be US citizens or US national residents of American Samoa or expecting citizenship by the date of the award, and to be "planning to attend graduate school in pursuit of a career in public service" (truman.gov, retrieved 17 September 2026). The Barry Goldwater Scholarship supports "college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers" in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering (goldwaterscholarship.gov, retrieved 17 September 2026).
Those two programs sit a year apart and point at two different futures. Write your class year and expected graduation month in the header, then check both against the program page before you write another line.
Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you submit it. National programs increasingly collect the resume through an online portal that parses it into fields first.
Choosing the best resume format for a scholarship resume
Reverse chronological inside each section, with the sections themselves ordered by the sponsor rather than by habit. One page while you are an undergraduate, two once you have funded work, presentations or publications to list.
A functional format fails here for a specific reason. Committees read for duration and progression: how long you stayed, what you were handed next, and whether anyone put you in charge of anything. A format that strips the dates removes exactly that evidence.

Political Science StudentJunior(802) 555-2188, clemmie.vt.abara@email.comThe class year line is not padding. When a program limits itself to sophomores and juniors, or to students in their penultimate year, the reviewer's first job is to confirm you sit inside the window. A file that confirms it in the header is never set aside for a query, and queries are where deadlines are missed.
Make use of a summary
Four lines: who you are and where, the one thing you have built or run, a number attached to it, and what you want the money for.

Right vs wrong: the same scholarship summary, twice
The right column can be scored against a published criterion. The left column asks a committee reading two hundred files to take your word for it, and at that volume nobody does.
Outline your experience
Organization, your role, city, dates, then three to five bullets. On a scholarship resume every bullet needs a duration as well as a number, because a committee is buying a trajectory rather than a quarter's output. Two years of one thing beats eight one-semester memberships, every time.

Adaptable resume employment history example
Program Director, Onion River Food Access Project, Burlington, VT, September 2023 to May 2026
Led a student-run meal and pantry program from 40 to 260 meals a week across three sites over 32 months, coordinating 31 volunteers on a weekly schedule.
Opened two additional distribution sites, each with a written opening checklist, a site lead and a food safety log.
Wrote the county hunger brief from three years of county data, cleaned and analyzed in R; two town select boards now cite it in their annual appropriations discussion.
Raised and administered $18,400 in local grants and reported against each one on the funder's own template.
Trained every volunteer on food handling and kept the program's health inspection record clear across three inspections.
Build the resume from the sponsor's published selection criteria
Every sponsor publishes what it scores, and no two publish the same thing.
The Truman Foundation evaluates candidates on "their leadership and service records, as well as their likelihood of success in graduate school", and requires that they be "planning to attend graduate school in pursuit of a career in public service" (truman.gov, retrieved 17 September 2026). The Goldwater Foundation supports "college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers" in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering (goldwaterscholarship.gov, retrieved 17 September 2026). One of those sentences asks for a service record. The other asks for a research trajectory. The same student's resume cannot lead with both, and the version that tries reads as if it were written for neither.
So do the mechanical thing. Take the sponsor's words, make each one a heading in the order the sponsor lists them, and put under each heading the evidence that proves it, with a date, a duration and a result.
| The sponsor's word | The heading you write | What belongs under it |
|---|---|---|
| Leadership | Leadership | Roles with a title, a term of office, and the number of people or the budget you carried |
| Service | Public and community service | Organization, hours or months, and what changed while you were there |
| Likelihood of success in graduate school | Research and academic preparation | Coursework, methods, a thesis or capstone with a real question, supervised research |
| Career in public service | Public service intention | The agency, office or sector, plus work you have already done inside it |
| Research career | Research experience | Project, technique, the laboratory, and any presentation or manuscript |
Adaptable resume example: one record, ordered two ways
Ordered for a leadership and service program:
1. Public and community service: Onion River Food Access Project, 32 months, 40 to 260 meals a week, three sites.
2. Leadership: elected program director, 31 volunteers, $18,400 administered, two sites opened.
3. Public service intention: state human services policy, evidenced by the county hunger brief and a legislative committee internship.
4. Research and academic preparation: 3.86 grade point average, statistics minor, quantitative methods in R.
Ordered for a research program:
1. Research experience: three years of county food insecurity data cleaned and analyzed in R, one published program evaluation.
2. Methods: survey design, R and Stata, administrative data linkage, human subjects training.
3. Academic preparation: statistics minor, econometrics and research design coursework, 3.86 grade point average.
4. Leadership and outreach: program director of a 31-volunteer student organization, two state conference presentations.
Same student, same facts, two documents. What changed is which evidence the reviewer meets in the first ten seconds.
The campus nomination round is a competition you have to win first
For several national awards your application never reaches the sponsor unless your institution sends it. The Truman Foundation requires candidates to be nominated by their institution, and "Schools are limited to four nominees plus three additional transfer nominations" (truman.gov, retrieved 17 September 2026).
That is at most seven students from an entire university in a given year. The campus round that picks them normally closes months before the national deadline, which is the first Tuesday in February. After that deadline the Foundation selects finalists roughly ten days later and interviews them for 20 minutes in front of regional review panels, which select one scholar per state (truman.gov, retrieved 17 September 2026).
So the campus fellowships office is your first reviewer, not an administrative step. Ask them in September for last year's internal deadline, and send them the resume in the sponsor's order, because that is the version they will be comparing against three other students.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
On a scholarship resume the skills block is short, and it is evidence rather than decoration. Name methods, software, languages and the governance work you have genuinely done.
Adaptable resume skills example
Research and analysis: Quantitative methods in R, Survey design and administration, Administrative data cleaning, Policy brief writing, Program evaluation
Program and people: Volunteer scheduling for 31 people, Site opening and standard operating procedures, Food safety training delivery, Grant reporting on funder templates
Public service: Municipal meeting testimony, Select board briefings, Coalition coordination across four partner organizations
Languages: English, native. Igbo, conversational. French, intermediate.
List your education and certifications
Institution, degree, expected conferral month, and the coursework that supports the thing the sponsor is funding. Give the grade point average as a number if it is strong; "excellent academic standing" is not a number and reads as an evasion.
Adaptable resume education and certifications example
Master of Public Administration, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT, expected May 2028. Concentration in state and local human services. Graduate research assistant on a $46,000 state grant.
Bachelor of Arts, Political Science, minor in Statistics, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT, May 2026. Grade point average 3.86. Coursework: econometrics, research design, state and local government, public budgeting.
Certifications: Human subjects research, CITI Program (2025). ServSafe Food Handler, National Restaurant Association (2023, renewed 2026).
Awards: Truman Scholarship institutional nominee (2024). Department of Political Science essay prize (2024). Two local community foundation awards totaling $4,500 (2023 and 2024).
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, and section headings that match the sponsor's language word for word. No photograph. Keep to the page limit the program states: where a program says two pages, two pages is a rule, and some foundations screen over-length files before a reader ever opens them.
Do
- Put your class year and expected graduation month in the header.
- Name each section with the sponsor's own word for it.
- Give every entry a start date, an end date and a result.
- List award amounts and the year, including the small local ones.
- Send the resume to your campus fellowships office months before the national deadline.
- Keep one master file with everything, and cut a version from it for each program.
Don’t
- Do not send the same file to a service program and a research program.
- Do not list a membership with no role and no dates; it reads as filler and committees say so.
- Do not write "various volunteer activities" when the organization's name and your hours are what is being scored.
- Do not exceed the stated page limit.
- Do not describe an identifiable student, client or family you served; describe the work and the group.
Scholarship market and outlook: who actually reads your file
A scholarship is not an occupation, so the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no employment level, no projected growth and no median wage for it. Any page that gives you one has invented it. What can be described is the shape of the competition and the calendar it runs on, and both are published by the sponsors themselves.
| Measure, national scholarship competition | What the sponsor publishes |
|---|---|
| Institutional nominees, Truman Scholarship | Four, plus three additional transfer nominations |
| Application deadline | First Tuesday in February |
| Finalists selected | Roughly ten days after the deadline |
| Interview | 20 minutes, regional review panel |
| Scholars selected | One per state |
| Eligible class years, Goldwater Scholarship | College sophomores and juniors |
| Fields, Goldwater Scholarship | Natural sciences, mathematics and engineering |
Read that table as a funnel and the strategy falls out of it. Getting nominated is a competition against your own classmates, decided on campus, on a deadline the sponsor does not set. Getting selected is a competition against one state's nominees. The interview is 20 minutes, which means the written file has to have done the explaining before anyone sits down.
The second useful fact is that these calendars are annual and most students are eligible in more than one cycle. Missing a campus round as a sophomore and winning it as a junior is an ordinary path, not a recovery from failure.
What a scholarship is worth, and what it is buying
There is no salary attached to being a scholarship applicant, and no federal wage series describes one. The money on this page is of two kinds: the award itself, whose amount and duration the sponsor publishes, and the thing the award is buying, which is a credential and the time to finish it.
For the second kind, the only honest figure is the whole workforce. The Bureau of Labor Statistics put median usual weekly earnings for full-time wage and salary workers age 25 and over at $1,268 in 2025, against an unemployment rate of 3.4 percent (BLS, Table 5.1, unemployment rates and earnings by educational attainment, 2025 data, table last modified 1 September 2026). That is the all-workers line, and it is the baseline a funded degree is measured against rather than a promise attached to any one award.
For the first kind, list what you have actually been given. Write each award with its name, the issuer, the year and the amount, including the $500 departmental prize, because three small awards read as a pattern of people choosing you and one unnamed "scholarship recipient" line reads as nothing. If an award is renewable, say for how many years. If it is a fellowship that covers tuition and a stipend, say which, since committees fund gaps and they can only see the gap you describe.
One more thing belongs in this section rather than in a cover letter: any funding you have administered. Managing an $18,400 grant or a $46,000 state grant is the clearest available evidence that money given to you is money that gets reported on.
Key takeaways for a scholarship resume
- Use the sponsor's own words as your section headings, in the sponsor's order.
- Put class year and expected graduation month in the header, because eligibility is a date.
- Give every entry a duration; committees are buying a trajectory.
- Keep a master file and cut a program-specific version from it, never the reverse.
- Treat the campus nomination round as the first competition, with its own earlier deadline.
- List award amounts and years, including small local ones.
- Say what you would do with the money in concrete terms: the degree, the field, the work after it.

Scholarship resume questions, answered
How long should a scholarship resume be?
One page as an undergraduate unless the program states otherwise, two once you have funded work, presentations or publications. Where the program states a limit, treat it as a hard rule: some foundations screen over-length files out before reading them.
Do I need a different resume for every scholarship?
You need a different order for every scholarship, which is a smaller job than it sounds. Keep one master file containing everything with dates and numbers, then cut and reorder from it against each sponsor's published criteria. A service program and a research program should receive files that look different in the first ten seconds.
What do I put on a scholarship resume with no work experience?
Anything with an organization, a date range and a result: volunteering, a school club role, a family responsibility that is genuinely a job, a research assistantship, a sports or music commitment with hours attached, or a project you ran yourself. Committees read duration and responsibility, not payroll status, so 380 logged hours over 22 months in one place is stronger evidence than a summer of paid work you left.
Should I list my grade point average?
Yes if it is strong, as a number, with the scale. If it is not strong, leave it off and put the relevant coursework and any upward trend in your major in its place. Do not write a vague phrase where a number would be; reviewers read that as an answer.
How early should I start on a national scholarship?
Before the campus round, which usually closes months ahead of the sponsor's own deadline. The Truman deadline is the first Tuesday in February and schools may nominate only four candidates plus three additional transfer nominations (truman.gov, retrieved 17 September 2026), so the internal screen is real. Ask the fellowships office in September for last year's internal date.
Can I use the same resume for graduate school applications?
Not without rebuilding it. A scholarship resume answers a sponsor's published criteria; a graduate admissions file answers what a department evaluates, and programs differ on whether they even want a resume or a full curriculum vitae. Build the one the program named.
