A college student resume is a one page document that shows what you can do and which hours you can hold while carrying a full course load.
However, the second half is the part most students leave out. After all, a term time employer is not buying your degree. They are buying a repeatable block of hours that survives a class timetable, a midterm week and a break when campus empties. As a result, the resume that states those hours clearly is the one managers schedule.
Resume guide for a college student resume
This guide and the corresponding college student resume example will cover:
- First, how to write a college student resume around a course load
- How to write work-study and campus jobs so a manager can staff them
- Then, three adaptable summaries: first year, third year and fourth year
- What the federal work-study rules require, and why they help your application
- Finally, what the market looks like for students who work, and what employers can expect to pay you
How to write a college student resume
Overall, six sections: contact header, summary, availability, education, experience, and skills. One page. In short, two pages is for people who have finished a career, not started one.
Availability is the section that does not appear on a standard resume and belongs on this one. Put it directly under the summary, four lines at most, and keep it accurate, because an employer can check everything in it against you in week three.
SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
- SummaryWhat can this person do, and how many hours can they hold?Top, four lines
- AvailabilityWhich days, which hours, which weeks?Under the summary, no more than four lines
- EducationWhat are they studying and when do they finish?Above experience until you graduate
- ExperienceCampus jobs, work-study, off campus work, all in one listReverse chronological
- SkillsWhat can they be put on unsupervised?Grouped, no rating bars
Write the term dates, not just the days
"Available weekday mornings" is a claim about a normal week. A manager staffing a coffee shop next to a campus needs to know what happens in the abnormal ones.
Write four things: the days and hours you can hold while classes run, the weekly ceiling you will not go over, what changes in finals weeks, and whether you are in town over winter and summer breaks. Dates make it concrete: "Autumn term runs 25 August to 12 December; I hold 12 hours a week through it."
Break availability is worth more than people think. Campus empties for a month in December and for most of the summer, which is exactly when a business near campus is short staffed and paying for cover.
Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you apply. Campus employment portals and chain retailers both parse the file before a person reads it.
Choosing the best resume format for a college student resume
Reverse chronological, one page, education above experience until you graduate.
Instead, keep every job in one list, campus and off campus together, with the same level of detail. That is because splitting "Campus Employment" from "Work Experience" hides the fact that you have held two jobs at once through a full course load, which is the strongest thing on the page.
Include your contact information

Make use of a summary
Four lines: what you are studying and when you finish, the jobs you hold now, one number from the work, and the hours you can commit to.

Right vs wrong: the same college student summary, twice
For example, a manager can put the right column on a rota. By contrast, the left column is a personality description, and nobody schedules a personality.
Outline your experience
Every job in one reverse chronological list: employer, city, your title, the dates, and the hours a week. Then two to four bullets, each with something countable in it.
In fact, hours a week is not padding on a student resume. It is the number that tells a manager whether you held eight hours or twenty-five while studying, and those are different claims about the same job title.

Adaptable resume employment history example
Student Manager, Front Desk, Campus Recreation Center, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH. August 2025 to present, 15 to 20 hours a week.
Build the weekly rota for 14 student staff around 14 class timetables, published a week ahead and fixed before finals week starts.
Uncovered shifts fell from 9 a term to 1 after the rota moved to a shared calendar with a named backup for every slot.
Train new student staff on entry checks, the card system and the incident log; wrote the two page opening checklist now used on every shift.
Hold the opening shift twice a week at 6:00 a.m. before a 9:10 class.
Turn work-study and campus jobs into a schedule a manager can staff
Work-study is not a job title, it is a funding arrangement, and most students write it as though the employer will already know what it means. Say what the job was, then say it was work-study, then say what the federal rules mean for the employer reading you.
To start, Federal Work-Study is need based: under Volume 6, Chapter 2 of the 2026 to 2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook, a student "must meet all general eligibility criteria and must have financial need" to qualify. Three more rules in that chapter are worth knowing, because they shape what a work-study line on your resume actually proves.
The first is pay. Federal Student Aid requires that "FWS employers must pay students at least the federal minimum wage in effect at the time of employment", and where a state or local law sets a higher rate, the school must comply with that instead. A school must also "ensure that the student is paid FWS compensation at least once a month".
The second is community service. A school "must use at least 7% of its FWS federal allocation(s) ... for an award year to pay the federal share of wages to students employed in community service jobs", and it must employ at least one student as a reading tutor for children in a reading tutoring project or performing family literacy activities. That is why so many work-study placements are in schools, libraries and community programs: the rule sends them there.
Then there is the third rule: the match to your studies. Schools "must provide FWS jobs that complement and reinforce each recipient's educational program or career goals" to the maximum extent practicable. So if your placement lines up with your major, say so on the page, because the alignment was the point rather than an accident.
Then turn all of it into a block a manager can staff. Four lines, no more:
| Line | What it says | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Term hours | The days, the hours, the weekly ceiling | Monday to Thursday 8:00 to 12:00, 12 hours a week maximum |
| Term dates | When the block starts and stops | Spring term 12 January to 24 April 2027 |
| Exceptions | What changes and when | No shifts in finals week, 20 to 24 April |
| Breaks | Whether you are in town and at what hours | Full time over winter break and from 10 May |
Work-study earnings are treated differently in your next aid offer
Two figures set the context for term time work. In October 2024, 37.6 percent of full time college students were in the labor force, against 76.2 percent of part time students (BLS, College Enrollment and Work Activity of Recent High School and College Graduates, published 22 April 2025). Roughly two in five full time students work; roughly three in four part time students do.
Federal Student Aid's own guidance in "8 Things You Should Know About Federal Work-Study" adds three practical points: undergraduate work-study students are paid by the hour, graduate and professional students may be paid hourly or by salary, and "You'll get paid at least once a month".
The point most students miss is the last one on that page: work-study earnings are excluded from income when your school calculates your next aid offer. An off campus job of the same size is not. That difference belongs in your thinking about which hours to take, even though it does not belong on the resume itself.
Do
- Put an availability block under the summary with days, hours, a weekly ceiling and the term dates.
- Say what happens in finals weeks and over breaks.
- Write hours a week on every job entry.
- Keep campus and off campus jobs in one list.
- Name the work-study placement as a job first and a funding source second.
- Say when your placement matches your major, because the rules intend it to.
Don’t
- Do not write "flexible" as your availability; it means nothing and it survives contact with a rota for about a week.
- Do not promise hours your timetable cannot hold.
- Do not hide a campus job because you think it is unimpressive.
- Do not leave the weekly hours off, since eight and twenty-five are different jobs.
- Do not list your class schedule in full; four lines, not a timetable.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Eight to twelve entries in three groups: systems you have been trained on, things you can be left to do alone, and the academic tools from your course that an employer can use.
Adaptable resume skills example
Systems: Point of sale and cash reconciliation, Library catalog and course reserves, Shift scheduling software, Microsoft Excel including pivot tables, Google Workspace
On your own: Opening and closing alone, Training new student staff, Building a weekly rota, Handling an incident log, Front desk cover for 200 plus visitors a day
From coursework: Stata, R for introductory econometrics, Survey data cleaning, Writing a two page brief from a data set
Languages: English, Japanese conversational
List your education and certifications
Degree, institution, city, expected graduation month and year, then coursework that touches the job, then anything short and dated.
Adaptable resume education example
Bachelor of Arts, Economics, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH. Expected May 2027. GPA 3.4. Carrying 15 to 16 credits a term while working 12 to 20 hours a week.
Relevant coursework: Intermediate Microeconomics, Introduction to Econometrics, Statistics for Economists, Data Analysis with R.
Certifications: Adult and Pediatric First Aid and CPR, American Red Cross (March 2026). Food Handler Certificate, Ohio Department of Health approved course (September 2024).
Also, put the credit load on the page. "15 credits and 20 hours a week" answers a question the employer would otherwise have to ask, and it is the strongest evidence a student has that the schedule is real.
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, one page, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph. PDF, named for yourself: dashiell-nakagawa-resume.pdf.
In practice, the availability block should be four short lines or a small table, not a grid of every hour of the week. A manager reads it in five seconds and wants the ceiling, the exceptions and the break answer.
Two column templates and sidebars are where parsing breaks, and campus employment portals, likewise, are as unforgiving as any other system.
College student job market and outlook
On pay, there is no Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational profile for "college student", because being a student is not an occupation. Instead, what is published is the labor force behavior of the population you belong to, and the earnings and unemployment picture for the workforce you are heading into.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Labor force participation, full time college students, October 2024 | 37.6 percent |
| Labor force participation, part time college students, October 2024 | 76.2 percent |
| Median usual weekly earnings, all full time workers age 25 and over, 2025 | $1,268 |
| Unemployment rate, all workers age 25 and over, 2025 | 3.4 percent |
The gap between 37.6 and 76.2 percent is the shape of the market you are applying into. For instance, most part time students work, and a minority of full time students do, which means the employers near a campus are used to hiring people with a timetable and already know how to build a rota around one. In other words, they are not doing you a favor by accommodating classes; they are staffing a business with the labor available. That is why stating your hours precisely helps you rather than narrowing your chances.
What salary you can expect as a college student
Term time pay is set by the job, the employer and your state's minimum wage, and no national figure describes it. Even so, what the federal rules do settle is the floor and the timing for one common kind of campus job.
For a Federal Work-Study placement, the Federal Student Aid Handbook requires employers to pay at least the federal minimum wage in effect at the time of employment, and to follow a higher state or local minimum where one applies. A school must ensure students receive work-study compensation at least once a month. Undergraduates earn an hourly wage; graduate and professional students may earn hourly or salaried pay.
Two practical consequences follow. First, a work-study award is a ceiling on federal share earnings rather than a wage: when you have earned the award, the hours stop unless the employer funds more. Ask what the award is and divide it by the hourly rate to find out how many hours it actually buys. Second, the aid calculation excludes work-study earnings from income for your next aid offer, which is not true of an off campus job at the same rate.
For the longer horizon, median usual weekly earnings for all full time wage and salary workers age 25 and over were $1,268 in 2025, with an unemployment rate of 3.4 percent (BLS, 2025 data, table last modified 1 September 2026). That is the whole workforce, not a starting salary, and it is the number a degree is being measured against.
Key takeaways for a college student resume
- To sum up, put an availability block under the summary: days, hours, weekly ceiling, term dates.
- Say what happens in finals weeks and over breaks, because that is what a manager cannot guess.
- Write hours a week on every job, since eight and twenty-five are different jobs.
- Next, keep campus, work-study and off campus work in one list.
- Name the work-study placement as a job first, then as a funding source.
- Put the credit load next to the hours; carrying both is the evidence.
- One page, single column, and a file name with your own name in it.

College student resume questions, answered
How long should a college student resume be?
One page, including the availability block. If it is overflowing, cut high school activities first, then coursework, then older jobs. A fourth year with two jobs and a leadership line still fits on one page if the entries are written tightly.
Should I put my GPA on a college student resume?
Put it on if it is 3.5 or higher, or if the employer asks. Otherwise the space is better spent on hours worked and what you were trusted with. A campus employer is not selecting on grades; they are selecting on whether you turn up at 6:00 a.m.
How do I write work-study on a resume?
Write the job first: the title, the employer, the hours a week and what you did. Then add "Federal Work-Study placement" as a short tag on the entry. The funding arrangement matters to the campus office and to your aid file; the work is what an outside employer is reading.
Can I put class projects on a college student resume?
Yes, if they are specific and finished. A named project with a data set, a method and a result reads as work. A list of course titles does not. Keep it to two projects and write them the way you would write a job.
What if I have never had a job at all?
Use what has a schedule attached: a club office you hold, a team you practice with, a volunteer shift you keep, a family responsibility that is genuinely a commitment of hours. Write the hours, the frequency and how long you have kept it up. Reliability is the trait being bought, and consistency over two semesters is evidence of it.
How many hours a week should I say I can work?
The number you can hold in your worst week of the term, not your best. Fifteen hours you never miss is worth more to an employer, and to your grades, than twenty-five that collapse in midterms. The ceiling you publish is the promise you are making.
