Summary

Yes. Greenhouse uses AI across its hiring software, and its Talent Matching add-on labels each resume from Strong match to Limited match against skills the recruiter picks. Greenhouse says the AI never advances or rejects anyone on its own. Instant rejections come from rules the employer writes on application questions. Your best move is a clear resume that names the job's key skills.

Does Greenhouse use AI? Yes: employers can add Talent Matching, which labels your resume from Strong match to Limited match against skills the recruiter picks. Greenhouse says the AI never rejects anyone, and people make every decision.

So the AI changes the order a recruiter reads applications in, not the outcome. This guide shows what the tool reads, what it ignores, and why some Greenhouse rejections still arrive in minutes.

Does Greenhouse use AI to screen resumes?

Yes, when the employer buys it. Greenhouse's Talent Matching scores resumes against a weighted list of skills the recruiter sets, then groups candidates into Strong, Good, Partial or Limited match. It is part of the Real Talent add-on, so many Greenhouse job boards run without it. Recruiters still open each profile and decide.

Greenhouse is the software, and the employer is the customer. So when people ask "does Greenhouse use AI," the honest answer is: Greenhouse sells AI tools, and each employer chooses which ones to turn on.

The short history

Greenhouse once said it did not rank people at all. Its 2023 article on AI hiring laws9 said it did not use algorithms to assign quality scores or rank candidates. Its January 2025 post for candidates8 went further and said Greenhouse never uses AI to rate candidates.

Then the volume problem grew. In September 2025, Greenhouse said every recruiter has 3X more applications to review5 than in 2022, and that application volume on Greenhouse rose 102%. That same release bundled AI Talent Matching, spam and fraud checks, and ID checks into Real Talent.

AI featureWhat it doesDoes it touch your resume?
Talent MatchingLabels your resume against the recruiter's skill listYes, at the first review stage
Keyword suggestionsSuggests search terms to narrow application reviewYes, through recruiter searches
Resume anonymizationHides identifying details during reviewYes, it hides them
Spam and fraud detectionFlags bot or suspicious applicationsYes
Greenhouse NotetakerRecords and drafts interview notesNo, it works after you interview

Greenhouse's help center lists 17 AI features3 in all. Most of them help recruiters write job posts, emails and interview questions, not judge you.

How does Greenhouse Talent Matching work?

The recruiter builds a "calibration," a list of 4 to 6 key skills with an importance rating for each. The AI reads your resume, compares it with that list, and gives a label: Strong, Good, Partial or Limited match. Candidates sit in groups by label and by application date inside each group.

Greenhouse's Talent Matching guide1 explains the setup. The recruiter can also add years of experience, industry and job titles to the calibration. Each time the recruiter saves a new version, the tool re-scores current candidates.

The five labels

LabelWhere it puts youWhat it means for you
Strong matchTop group in the review listLikely read first
Good matchSecond groupStill in the early group
Partial matchMiddle groupA recruiter may still read you
Limited matchLowest scored groupLower in the queue, not rejected
Needs manual reviewOutside the scored groupsA person reviews you without a score

What the AI reads and skips

The Talent Matching data FAQ2 lists the inputs. The AI reads your skills, job titles, years of experience, employment dates and company names, plus industry where it can. But it does not use your name or contact details, and it skips your answers on the application form.

That last point matters. If a key skill only appears in a form answer, the matcher never sees it. So put every core skill in the resume itself.

Write your skills the way the recruiter will

The recruiter types 4 to 6 skills into the calibration, usually straight from the job post. So mirror the post's wording. If it says "Kubernetes," write "Kubernetes," not just "container orchestration."

Where the label stops

The label only shows in the first Application Review stage. Recruiters can override any score, and the label is not visible later in the process. Once you reach a phone screen, people judge you on the interview.

Does Greenhouse reject resumes automatically?

Not with AI. Greenhouse says Talent Matching never advances or rejects anyone. But employers can set rule-based auto-reject on application questions, such as "Are you authorized to work in the US?" If your answer fails the rule, Greenhouse can reject you and send an email in minutes, with no AI involved.

Greenhouse is clear on the AI side.

Greenhouse Support, Talent Matching Data Processing FAQ

The same FAQ says no mechanism rejects or advances a candidate based on an AI rating. Greenhouse's Real Talent launch release6 also says the hiring team keeps the job of reviewing and selecting applicants.

So why did you get rejected so fast?

Fast rejections come from rules the employer writes. Greenhouse's application rules4 fire when your answer to a job post question meets a condition. The Auto-Reject rule on Plus and Pro plans can reject you and email you, or reject you silently.

A common setup: the post asks if you have five years of experience, and "No" triggers a rejection. That is a filter on your answer, not a judgment of your resume. Our guide to ATS knockout questions shows how to answer these honestly without selling yourself short.

TemplatePush back: a fast rejection after a knockout question

Recruiter: "Our system screens out anyone without five years of experience."

"I understand. I have four years of full-time work plus a one-year paid internship in the same stack."

Recruiter: "The rule only counts full-time roles."

"That makes sense. Could a person check my resume against the role, since I meet the other four requirements?"

Do

  • Read every screening question twice before you answer.
  • Answer required-experience questions honestly and exactly.
  • Treat a Talent Matching label as your place in line.

Don’t

  • Assume a 10-minute rejection means the AI judged you.
  • Hide keywords in white text to game the matcher.
  • Put key skills only in form answers the AI skips.

How does Greenhouse use AI in recruitment beyond matching?

Most of Greenhouse's AI helps recruiters with writing and admin. It drafts job descriptions, interview questions and emails, summarizes interview scorecards, takes interview notes, and forecasts offer timing. Real Talent also flags spam and fraud and offers ID checks through CLEAR. Only matching, keyword suggestions and fraud checks touch your application early.

Before you apply

AI can draft the job post you read. The help center lists job post description suggestions and scorecard attribute suggestions. So the skills on the post often become the skills the recruiter scores you on later.

While you wait

Keyword suggestions help recruiters narrow application review to top candidates. Our guide on whether Greenhouse searches resumes for keywords covers how those searches find you. Spam and fraud detection also flags bot submissions and suspicious patterns.

After you interview

Greenhouse Notetaker records and transcribes interviews, then drafts notes mapped to the scorecard questions. Scorecard summaries then show the hiring team where interviewers agreed and disagreed. So clear, specific answers in the interview end up in the summary.

Can you opt out of Greenhouse AI screening?

Sometimes. Greenhouse built an opt-out into Talent Matching, but each employer decides whether to turn it on. If it is on, you see an AI notice on the job post. Opting out labels you "Needs manual review," so a person reads your resume with no AI score. Greenhouse also runs monthly outside bias audits.

The data FAQ says candidates see an AI disclaimer on the job post when the employer enables the opt-out. If you opt out during an active application, Greenhouse deletes your match score and its reasoning. Our full guide on how to opt out of AI resume screening covers when it helps.

What the bias audits check

Greenhouse says Warden AI, an outside firm, audits Talent Matching every month and after each algorithm change. The audits cover 10 demographic categories and align with NYC Local Law 144, Colorado SB205 and California FEHA. If a test fails, the new version cannot go live.

New York City's law took effect July 5, 2023. A Crowell & Moring alert10 explains that employers must audit covered tools and give candidates ten business days' notice. That is one reason more Greenhouse job posts now carry AI notices.

Should you opt out of AI resume screening? Learn when it helps, when it hurts, and how to make your resume work for both ATS software and recruiters.

How do you write a resume for Greenhouse's AI?

Name the job's 4 to 6 core skills in plain words, show each one in a bullet with a result, and keep clear titles and dates. Use one column, standard headings and a DOCX or text-based PDF. Then run the file through an ATS checker and fix anything the parser drops.

The matcher can only label what the parser pulls out. Our guide on how Greenhouse ATS works explains the pipeline. And tables or columns can scramble your file, as our Greenhouse resume parsing test shows.

  1. Find the core skillsCopy the job post and mark the 4 to 6 skills it repeats most. Those are likely in the calibration.
  2. Match the wordsUse the post's exact terms in your skills list and in one bullet each.
  3. Make titles and dates clearThe AI reads job titles, dates and company names, so put each on its own line.
  4. Check the parseUpload to a checker and fix any field that comes out blank or scrambled.

Don't lean on the form

Talent Matching skips structured form answers. So if the form asks "Years of Python?", still show Python in your resume bullets. The form feeds the rules, and the resume feeds the AI.

What should you check before you apply on Greenhouse?

Before you submit, confirm each core skill appears in your resume, not just the form. Check that titles, dates and company names sit on clear lines, the file is one column, and every screening question is answered honestly. Then send a matching cover letter and follow up with a person.

Frequently asked questions

Does Greenhouse use AI to reject applicants?

No. Greenhouse says Talent Matching never advances or rejects anyone. Automatic rejections come from employer rules on application questions, not from AI.

What is Greenhouse Talent Matching?

It is an AI tool in the Real Talent add-on. It compares your resume with a weighted skill list the recruiter sets and labels you Strong, Good, Partial or Limited match.

Can I see my Greenhouse match label?

Greenhouse describes the labels as a recruiter tool in the first review stage. So improve your match before you apply, not after.

Does Greenhouse AI look at my name?

No. Greenhouse says the matching algorithm does not use names or contact details. It reads skills, titles, experience, dates and company names.

Is Greenhouse an automated employment decision tool?

Greenhouse said in 2023 that it does not consider itself one under NYC Local Law 144. It now runs monthly outside bias audits on Talent Matching that align with that law.

Why does my application say "Needs manual review"?

That label means the AI could not process your resume, AI is off for the job, or you opted out. A person reviews you without a score.
