Application for Regional Sales Manager, North Central, Vantek Surgical
Dear Ms. Achterberg,
I am applying for the Regional Sales Manager post covering the North Central region at Vantek Surgical. I currently lead nine surgical and capital equipment representatives across five Upper Midwest states on a $28.4 million quota, and we closed $29.5 million last year at 104 percent of plan. Before that I managed a four-person instrument team at $6.2 million.
The part I would want to bring to Vantek is not the attainment, it is what sits under it. When I took the region, four of nine representatives were at or above quota and ramp to first full quota was nine months. I recarved the territories on account potential rather than drive time, which moved 22 percent of the accounts and stopped anyone carrying more than 1.3 times the team median, then rebuilt the first sixty days around live account planning with a named mentor instead of product training alone. Seven of nine are now at or above quota and ramp is 5.5 months. The same discipline shows up in the forecast: six consecutive quarters within 4 percent of actual on 3.2 times coverage, because deals move stages on customer evidence rather than on rep confidence. I hired six representatives in that period and five are still in seat at eighteen months.
Vantek's North Central region reads as the same problem I have already worked. Two of the four territories have been vacant this year, and your ambulatory surgery center business is growing faster than the hospital book, which usually means the territory map was drawn for a hospital-only sales motion. I would spend my first sixty days on the carve and the ramp plan rather than on the quarter, because those are the two things that decide the next four quarters.
I hold the Certified Professional Sales Leader credential from the National Association of Sales Professionals and run deal reviews on MEDDICC exit criteria. I can start within four weeks of an offer. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely, Malik Sundaresan
Summary
A sales manager cover letter names the team you carried, the quota it held, what it attained, and the system change that produced the result. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, the openings that beat leadership adjectives, and what to write when the quarter went badly.
Sales Manager cover letter examples by experience level
A sales manager cover letter is a one-page letter that reports a team's number and then explains what you changed to get it.
It is a narrow letter and that is the point. A vice president reading applications has a folder of files that all say the same things: proven leader, high-performing team, consistently exceeded targets. None of those can be checked against a compensation report, and the compensation report is what the reader is holding.
Guide to a sales manager cover letter
This guide and the corresponding sales manager cover letter example will cover:
- How to structure the letter, paragraph by paragraph
- Why headcount and team quota belong in the first two lines
- What to write when the team missed the plan
- How first-line and second-line management letters differ
How to write a sales manager cover letter
| Paragraph | Its job | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | The post, the team you run now, its quota and its attainment | 2 to 3 sentences |
| Evidence | The system you changed and the two numbers that moved | 4 to 6 sentences |
| Fit | Something specific about their sales organization, and what you would take first | 3 to 4 sentences |
| Close | Credential, notice period, thank you | 2 sentences |
Headcount and team quota in the first two lines, every time
A vice president sizes your file before evaluating it. Nine representatives on $28.4 million and four on $6.2 million are different jobs, and a letter that withholds both makes the reader guess, usually downward.
So open with the pair: "I run nine surgical and capital equipment representatives across five states on a $28.4 million quota, and we closed $29.5 million last year." Two sentences in, the reader knows the band, the segment and the result.
Then give one number only a manager owns: the share of reps at or above quota, ramp to first full quota, or forecast accuracy across consecutive quarters. Any one of those says you ran a system rather than got a good year.

Openings that work
| Instead of | Use |
|---|---|
| I am a results-driven sales leader with a proven track record | I lead nine representatives across five states on a $28.4 million quota, closed at $29.5 million |
| I am writing to express my interest in your sales manager opening | I am applying for the Regional Sales Manager post covering the North Central region |
| I have built and motivated high-performing teams throughout my career | Seven of nine representatives are at or above quota, up from four of nine when I took the region |
The right column gives a vice president something to check. The left column gives them a sentence they have read eleven times this week.
What counts as evidence when the year was hard
Not every manager has a 104 percent year to write about, and pretending otherwise is easy to catch in the interview.
| Kind of evidence | What it looks like in a sentence |
|---|---|
| Distribution | Reps at or above quota went from 2 of 9 to 6 of 9 while the plan grew 18 percent |
| Ramp | New hire ramp to first full quota cut from nine months to 5.5 |
| Forecast | Six consecutive quarters within 4 percent of actual on 3.2 times coverage |
| Retention | Five of six hires still in seat at eighteen months; regretted attrition 9 percent against 24 |
A team that went from 78 percent to 96 percent of plan while the share of reps at quota doubled is a manager doing the job in a bad year. Give the market condition in half a sentence, and never blame the product.
First-line manager or second-line: what changes
If you are applying for a first-line post, lead with the team you coach: headcount, quota, attainment, the share at quota and ramp. If you are applying for a second-line post, lead with the managers you develop, the territory and quota model you own, and forecast accuracy across teams. Name the segment, because a buying committee in acute care is not a buying committee in software. Give one number that came from a system change and say what the change was.
Do not open with your own President's Club year; it belongs in the resume, one line, in the role where it happened. Do not claim a team result that one representative delivered. Do not describe yourself as a results-driven or people-first leader. Do not write a letter with no company name in it, and do not quote an attainment percentage without the plan it was measured against.
A small management layer paid on a very wide band
Sales managers held 650,100 jobs in 2025, with projected growth of 4 percent through 2035, a change of 29,000 jobs, and about 47,300 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). The median annual wage was $148,270 as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $73,170 and the highest 10 percent over $290,540 (BLS, May 2025).
Industry explains much of that spread: a median of $174,440 in finance and insurance against $100,000 in retail trade (BLS, May 2025).
The reader is placing you on that band from very little information, so the sentence naming your headcount, team quota and segment does more work than any sentence about leadership philosophy.
Length, format and sending it
One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. PDF unless the portal says otherwise.
Address a person. Sales leadership is public on almost every company site, and "Dear Hiring Manager" on a letter this specific reads as a file sent to twelve companies.
Use the same figures as your resume so the two agree. Our sales manager resume example is written with the numbers used here, and the ATS resume checker will tell you whether the pair parses cleanly.
Key takeaways
- Put headcount, team quota and attainment in the first two sentences.
- Give one number only a manager owns: share at quota, ramp, or forecast accuracy.
- Explain the system change that produced it, not just the number.
- Name the segment, because the buying committee is what transfers between jobs.
- Write the hard year with the distribution rather than the headline.
- Name one specific thing about their sales organization and what you would do first.
- Address a named person and match the resume figures exactly.

Sales manager cover letter questions, answered
How long should a sales manager cover letter be?
One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. Vice presidents read these in batches between forecast calls, and length does not read as effort.
Should I put my own sales numbers in a sales manager cover letter?
Only if you are still carrying a bag alongside the team, and then in one clause. The letter is about the team's number. A manager who spends two paragraphs on personal closing history reads as someone who has not made the transition.
What do I write if my team missed quota?
Write the miss and the distribution underneath it. "The team closed 96 percent of a plan that grew 18 percent, with reps at or above quota up from two of nine to six of nine" reads better than a bare 104 percent from a year with one hero rep.
Do I need a cover letter when the application is a portal?
Attach one wherever there is a field for it. The portal collects the same structured fields from every candidate. The letter is the only place you can say what you changed about a territory map, a ramp plan or a comp plan.
How do I write to a company whose sales organization I do not know?
Spend twenty minutes on their careers page and their open sales roles. How many representative posts are open, in which regions and for which segment tells you most of what you need. One accurate sentence about their coverage problem is worth more than a paragraph of admiration.
