Application for SEO Lead, Meridian Outdoor Group

Dear Ms. Solberg,

I am applying for the SEO Lead post at Meridian Outdoor Group. I currently run search for a 41,000 URL outdoor retail catalog on Shopify Plus, and I would rather defend one result properly than list several that cannot be checked.

Last year I rebuilt 1,200 category page templates and deliberately held back a matched set of 1,200 comparable pages as a control. Over the 16 weeks from June to September, non-branded clicks on the tested pages rose 34 percent while the holdout rose 6 percent, measured on the same page sets against the same weeks a year earlier. That window also contained a core update in March of the same year and a 22 percent reduction in paid search spend, both of which I put in the report alongside the result rather than leaving out. In the same period I cleared 3,412 redirect chains and took indexed page coverage from 61 percent to 92 percent of the canonical set, which are metrics I control outright and can evidence without argument.

I crawled your storefront before writing this. Your faceted navigation is generating a large duplicate set from color and size parameters, and your category pages are returning a field Largest Contentful Paint above the 2.5 second good threshold on mobile, which is where most of your traffic sits. Neither is a quick fix, but both are the kind of work I would want to scope properly in a first month rather than promise a number for in a cover letter.

I ship template changes myself through a pull request rather than filing tickets and waiting, and I would bring the same measurement standard: named page sets, a stated window, a prior-year baseline and a holdout whenever the change is template-level. I am available with four weeks' notice. Thank you for reading.

Sincerely, Zara Haddad-McIvor

Summary

An SEO cover letter should make one claim and defend it properly: the window, the baseline, the page set, the holdout, and the algorithm update or budget change that shared the period. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, openings that survive a skeptical reader, and what to write when the result you are proudest of cannot be attributed to you.

SEO cover letter examples by experience level

An SEO cover letter is a one-page letter that makes a single claim about your work and defends it, rather than listing five claims nobody can check.

The reader has seen "grew organic traffic 300 percent" in nine of the last ten applications and discounted every one, because search results move for reasons nobody in the letter caused. One properly evidenced result is worth more than a page of percentages.

Expert Tip

Disclose the confounder yourself, in the same sentence as the win

The most effective sentence in this field is the one that argues against you and leaves the result standing.

"Non-branded clicks on the tested pages rose 34 percent over 16 weeks while the matched holdout moved 6 percent, in a window that also contained a March core update and a 22 percent cut to paid search" tells a hiring manager everything. You keep a holdout. You know what else moved. You did not hide it.

Volunteering the objection answers the question that ends most SEO interviews: how do you know it was you?

Make one claim and defend it

Pick your single best piece of work and give it the whole middle paragraph. Five sentences will state the window, the baseline, the page set, the holdout and the confounders, and that buys more credibility than four extra claims.

Ordering matters: result, then comparison, then disclosure. A confounder you disclose reads as rigour; the same one found later by the reader reads as concealment.

If you have no holdout, say what you do have: a prior-year baseline for the same page set, a phased rollout you can compare across waves, or a competitor set that did not move. All are weaker than a holdout and all are far stronger than a bare percentage.

Do

Name the window with start and end months. Say which page set the number applies to. Volunteer the core update, migration, seasonal peak or paid spend change inside it. Lead with metrics you control, such as indexation, crawl health and Core Web Vitals field data. Crawl the employer's site before you write and name one real finding.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not give a percentage with no window and no baseline. Do not take credit for a recovery that followed an algorithm update. Do not promise a ranking or a traffic figure for a site you have not examined. Do not paste a client's Search Console screenshot into an application without permission. Do not report a laboratory performance score as though it were field data.

Statistical insight

Cite the thresholds, because they are fixed and published

Core Web Vitals are one of the few places in SEO where a number means the same thing to you and to your reader. Google's good thresholds are Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint at 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift at 0.1 or less (web.dev, "Web Vitals", Google), and Interaction to Next Paint became a stable Core Web Vital in 2024, replacing First Input Delay.

Always say whether your figure is field data from real users or a laboratory score from a synthetic run, and report at the 75th percentile, which is the basis the thresholds are assessed on.

BLS publishes no Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for an SEO title, so there is no official median to quote. The bracketing occupations had medians of $78,760 for market research analysts, $92,650 for web developers and $104,000 for web and digital interface designers in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Technical depth and measurement rigour move you inside that bracket, and a letter is a good place to show both.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words, PDF unless the portal says otherwise, addressed to a named person.

Spend twenty minutes on the employer's site first. A crawl of a few hundred URLs and a field performance check will give you one accurate observation, which is the sentence no other applicant can copy.

Keep every figure identical to your resume. Our SEO resume example uses the same test and window.

Key takeaways

  1. Make one claim and defend it rather than listing five.
  2. Give the window with start and end months.
  3. Name the baseline and the exact page set.
  4. Report the holdout, or say honestly what you have instead.
  5. Disclose the algorithm update or budget change yourself, in the same sentence.
  6. Lead with metrics you control, and cite Core Web Vitals as field data at the 75th percentile.
  7. Crawl their site first and name one real finding.

SEO cover letter questions, answered

How long should an SEO cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words, with the evidence paragraph taking roughly half of it. It is the point of the letter, so let it run longer than the others.

What if my best result cannot be attributed to me?

Say that. "Traffic recovered after a core update in a period when we had also finished a migration, so I do not claim the recovery; what I can evidence is 98.4 percent redirect coverage on the top 1,000 landing pages and clicks back to baseline in five weeks." Careful attribution is a hiring signal.

Should I audit the employer's site before applying?

Yes, briefly, and say that you did. One accurate finding from a real crawl beats any amount of enthusiasm. Keep it to something observable from outside, and resist promising an outcome for a problem you have only seen the surface of.

Do I mention agency or in-house preference?

Mention scope instead, because that is what the reader is estimating: number of URLs, number of languages, platform, and whether you ship template changes yourself or file tickets. Those four facts place you more accurately than the labels do.

How do I write this letter with no commercial SEO experience?

Run a real site and report it honestly: the pages you changed, the window, the baseline, the confounders, and what you would do differently. Add a short technical audit of a public site. Two careful case studies show the reasoning the job is paid for; a list of courses does not.
