Shops hire under pressure. A technician has quit, the diagnostic queue is backing up, and a service adviser is already telling customers next week. A letter written for that reality reads differently from every other letter in the folder.

Put the certification list in the first paragraph, not the last
A service manager reading applications is holding a board with specific holes in it. Someone has to take the driveability tickets. Someone has to be able to depower a hybrid. Someone has to run state inspections.
Name what you clear: "I hold ASE A1 through A8, so I am a Master Automobile Technician, plus L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialist." That sentence answers the question they actually have, and it is verifiable, which most sentences in a cover letter are not.
Then add what almost nobody adds: the second thing you can take off the board. "I also hold xEV Technician Electrical Safety, so the high voltage work you are currently sending out can stay in the shop."

At Maumee Valley Motors I take the diagnostic queue: the intermittent no-code tickets, the parasitic draws and the network faults that come back off other benches. I have run static and dynamic calibrations for three years and would want to own that bay, along with the hybrid work. Efficiency without a comeback rate reads as someone who is fast and expensive. A comeback rate without efficiency reads as someone who is careful and slow. Give both, with the period they cover.

Dealership, independent and fleet
Do
- For a dealership, lead with ASE letters and any manufacturer factory training level, because that is the ladder they hire against and the pay follows it.
- For an independent shop, lead with breadth and diagnostic range, since one technician has to cover more systems on more makes.
- For a fleet, lead with preventive maintenance discipline, documentation, inspection licenses and uptime, because the customer is an operations manager who counts vehicles off the road.
- Name one real thing about the shop, taken from their own site or listing.
Don’t
- Do not describe yourself as passionate about cars; every letter in the folder says it.
- Do not claim Master status without A1 through A8, since ASE credentials are verified before an offer.
- Do not quote an efficiency number with no period attached.
- Do not claim high voltage work without the safety certification behind it.
- Do not send a letter with no shop name in it.
Where the letter is worth the most money
Automotive service technicians and mechanics had a median annual wage of $50,620 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $34,660 and the highest 10 percent above $81,790 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
The setting drives most of that spread. Automobile dealers employ 32 percent of the occupation at a median of $59,920, while automotive mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance employs 25 percent at $49,630 and other automotive repair and maintenance 4 percent at $35,730 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
The occupation itself is growing: 825,800 jobs in 2025, a projected 5 percent rise to 866,700 by 2035, and about 66,200 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). So the letter is rarely fighting for scarcity. It is fighting to be read into the top half of a pay band, and the certification list plus two numbers is what does that.
Length, format and sending it
One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. PDF unless the application portal says otherwise, named for yourself and the post: jarrod-vanterpool-automotive-technician-cover-letter.pdf.
Address a person. Service managers and fixed operations directors are usually named on a dealership site, and "Dear Hiring Manager" on an otherwise specific letter reads as a letter sent to twelve shops.

How long should a mechanic cover letter be?
One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. Service managers read these between repair orders, and length does not read as effort.
Do I need a cover letter if the application is an online form?
Attach one wherever there is a field for it. The form collects the same structured data from every applicant. The letter is the only place you can say which part of the board you would take, what you would own, and what your efficiency actually is.
Should I mention pay plan or efficiency in the letter?
Efficiency, yes, with its period. Pay plan, no, beyond one neutral question at the end if you want to ask which plan the post is on. Shops differ: the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that some repair shops pay technicians hourly while others pay based on the amount of work completed (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025), so the letter is the wrong place to negotiate and the right place to demonstrate.
What do I write with no shop experience yet?
Write the training as a job. Name the program, the systems it covered, the entry-level ASE tests you have passed, your Section 609 refrigerant certification, and the tools you already own. Then say which board you want to start on and what you are testing for next. Shops hiring apprentices are buying attendance, honesty about your limits, and a plan.
Is it worth mentioning hybrid and electric vehicle certification?
Yes, and early. About 22 percent of light-duty vehicles sold in the United States in 2025 were hybrid, battery electric or plug-in hybrid (US Energy Information Administration, February 2026), and many independent shops still sublet that work. ASE runs xEV Electrical Safety Awareness and xEV Technician Electrical Safety certifications, both valid five years (ASE, accessed September 2026). Saying you hold one tells a shop owner you can bring revenue back in house.
