How to write a postal service worker resume

Keep it factual. USPS states that applicants must be 18 at appointment or 16 with a high school diploma, must be a United States citizen, permanent resident, or citizen of American Samoa or another United States territory, and must pass a criminal background check, drug screening and medical assessment (United States Postal Service, careers, 2026). Choosing the best resume format

Reverse chronological, one page, months as well as years. The application asks for recent employment history, and the resume should match it exactly.

Skills-based formats hide the two things this employer cares about most: whether you have done physical work outdoors or on a moving floor, and whether you turned up.

Include your contact information

The availability line is doing real work. Postal service workers commonly work Saturdays and some Sundays because mail delivery schedules require it (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2026), and saying plainly that you can removes the largest single reason new hires do not last.

Choose the craft before you apply, because the assessment follows the craft

This is the part that decides most postal applications, and it happens before anyone reads a word you wrote. USPS hires into distinct crafts, each with its own assessment version and working conditions, and each posting invites you to one assessment. Applying to the wrong craft spends the 12-month retake lock on that version.

The assessment is not a knowledge test. Then there is the conversion path, which is why people take an assistant role at all. Assistant positions are non-career, and under the National Agreement's memorandum of understanding, city carrier assistants who reach 24 months of relative standing convert to part-time flexible career status within their installation. Relative standing runs from your hire date at that installation, and ties are broken first by your ranking on the appointment register, which reflects your assessment score plus any veterans' preference points, then by the last digits of the social security number (National Association of Letter Carriers, The Postal Record, April 2024).

So the installation matters, because relative standing is installation-specific, and the assessment score is not just pass or fail: it feeds the register that breaks ties on conversion day.

List your driving record, clearances and veterans' preference

Three short blocks. None is a certificate in the usual sense, and all three are screened.

Driving: Texas driver licence valid through 2029. Six years of continuous unsupervised driving, with no suspensions, revocations, at-fault accidents or drug or alcohol related convictions.
Eligibility: United States citizen, 18 or over, able to pass criminal background check, drug screening and medical assessment. Registered with Selective Service.
Veterans' preference: 5-point preference claimed, DD-214 available. United States Army, 2018 to 2022, honourable discharge.

The driving block exists because of a specific standard. USPS reviews driving records from every state you have lived in over the past five years and requires at least two years of documented, unsupervised driving experience, continuous and immediately preceding consideration. One or more licence suspensions in the past three years, two or more in the past five, a revocation in the past five, or any conviction for a driving offence involving drugs or alcohol are disqualifying (USPS Handbook EL-312, section 516). If your record is clean, say so. If it is not, know the rule before you spend an assessment attempt.

Veterans' preference is worth claiming correctly. USPS recognises 5-point preference for qualifying active duty service, 10-point compensable disability preference at 10 to 30 percent and at 30 percent or more, 10-point preference for a Purple Heart or other current service-connected disability, derived preference for certain family members, and sole survivor preference (USPS Handbook EL-312, section 483). Those points attach to the appointment register, the same register that breaks conversion ties.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, one page, no photograph, no graphics. The application system reads the file before a person does, and that person is checking dates and availability rather than the layout.

Be straight with yourself about the direction. The Bureau of Labor Statistics attributes the decline to new mail sorting technology, the move of bill payment and correspondence online, and centralised delivery such as cluster mailboxes, which reduces door-to-door routes (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 27 August 2026).

What salary you can expect as a postal service worker

The median annual wage for postal service workers was $59,880 as of May 2025, or $28.79 an hour, with the lowest 10 percent under $42,390 and the highest 10 percent over $81,040 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

Within that, postal service clerks sat highest at a median of $62,130, mail carriers at $60,550, and mail sorters, processors and processing machine operators at $58,470 (BLS, May 2025). The spread reflects craft, service and career status rather than negotiation, because pay follows a negotiated schedule.

That is why the conversion path matters more than any line about salary expectations. Nothing on your resume changes the rate. What your resume and assessment can change is how quickly you get onto the register and into an installation where conversions are moving.
