Summary

An academic tutor resume names the college support service you worked in, the courses you are qualified to tutor by their catalogue numbers, and the certification tier behind your training. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the service models that decide who reads your file, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for the occupation.

Academic Tutor resume examples by experience level

An academic tutor resume is a one to two page document that names the support service you worked in, the college courses you are qualified to tutor, and the certification tier your training sits at.

The first item is the one most applicants skip, and it decides who reads the file. Academic tutoring in higher education is not an arrangement between a tutor and a family. It is delivered by a unit with a director, a budget line and an assessment report: a learning centre, a writing centre, a supplemental instruction programme, or an embedded tutor attached to named course sections. Those units hire differently and measure different things.

Resume guide for an academic tutor resume

This guide and the corresponding academic tutor resume example will cover:

  • How to write an academic tutor resume, section by section
  • The higher education support services and what each is hiring for
  • Three adaptable summaries: peer tutor, professional tutor and lead tutor
  • What CRLA certification actually certifies, and how to write it
  • What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write an academic tutor resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, subject qualification, tutoring experience, service model and certification, and education. One page as an undergraduate peer tutor, two once you hold a graduate degree and supervisory work.

Subject qualification sits high because it is the gate at college level. A director cannot place you against MATH 221 because you are good with people. They place you because your transcript shows that course, or one above it, at a grade the institution accepts.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Subject qualificationWhich catalogue courses can I schedule this person against?Directly under the summary
Service modelDrop-in centre, writing centre, supplemental instruction, embedded?A labelled line per job
Certification tierWhat training standard has this person been through? With education, with the level named
Tutoring experienceWhat moved, and over how many contact hours?Reverse chronological, with numbers
Expert Tip

Write course numbers, not subject names

"Mathematics" tells a learning centre director nothing. Their scheduling grid is built from catalogue codes, because that is how demand arrives: forty requests for MATH 221, twelve for CHEM 343.

Write the list the way the grid is built: "Qualified to tutor MATH 112, 114, 211, 221 and 222; STAT 240 and 371; CHEM 103 and 104." Spell out one title so the equivalence is obvious across institutions, then add the upper-division courses you can also cover. Every centre has enough general chemistry tutors and not enough organic chemistry tutors.

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker first. Student employment portals parse the document before a human opens it.

Choosing the best resume format for an academic tutor resume

Reverse chronological, with a subject qualification block above the experience. One page as an undergraduate, two once you have a master's and supervisory responsibility.

Skills-based formats fail here. This field promotes on contact hours and tenure in a unit, and retention is the biggest operational problem in a service staffed largely by students. A format that hides the timeline hides what a director looks for.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: subject area and level, service model, contact volume, and one outcome with a number attached.

Academic Tutor, Mathematics and Statistics, Tutoring and Learning Services, Madison College, Madison, WI, August 2020 to Present

Tutor the developmental and gateway mathematics sequence plus statistics for non-majors, roughly 620 contact hours a year across drop-in, appointment and embedded formats.

Embedded tutor for 3 sections of MATH 141, attending lecture and running two workshop hours a week; students attending 5 or more sessions passed at 79% against a section rate of 61%.

Rebuilt the drop-in triage routine so students are matched by course code rather than subject area, cutting mean wait time from 14 minutes to 5.

Train and observe 8 new mathematics tutors a year against the CRLA Level 1 topic list, and write the unit's annual contact-hour and pass-rate analysis.

Name the service you worked in and the certification level behind it

This is the block that separates a higher education tutoring file from a general one, and almost nobody writes it.

Academic support in a college runs through distinct service models that share a job title and very little else. A director hiring an embedded tutor wants different evidence from a writing centre coordinator.

Service modelWhat it isWhat the resume must show
Drop-in learning centreWalk-in help, often several students at a tableCourse breadth, triage, volume, an unpredictable queue

Service models: Drop-in learning centre (5 semesters), appointment tutoring (6 years), embedded tutoring in MATH 141 (3 semesters), supplemental instruction leader for MATH 211 (2 semesters)

Qualified to tutor: MATH 112, 114, 141, 211, 221, 222; STAT 240 and 371; ECON 101 quantitative sections

Certification: CRLA International Tutor Training Program Certification, Level 3, awarded through the Madison College Tutoring and Learning Services programme

Systems: TutorTrac, Penji, Canvas, Blackboard Collaborate

Two things about certification are worth getting right, because getting them wrong signals that you have not worked in the field.

The first is what it certifies. The College Reading and Learning Association certifies tutor training programmes, not individual tutors; a certified programme then certifies the tutors who complete it. The correct line names your level and the institution whose programme awarded it.

The second is what each level costs. Under CRLA's International Tutor Training Program Certification requirements, Level 1 takes at least ten training hours across at least eight required topics, six of them tutor-trainer supervised, interactive and live, plus 25 hours of tutoring. Levels 2 and 3 each add ten training hours, four topics and 25 tutoring hours, reaching 75 cumulative tutoring hours at Level 3. A director reading "Level 3" is reading 30 hours of training behind it.

Expert Tip

Content tutoring and academic coaching are two different jobs

Learning centres draw a scope line that new applicants routinely cross. Content tutoring works on the subject: the derivative, the titration, the argument in the paragraph. Academic coaching works on the behaviour around it: time allocation, reading strategy, exam preparation, help-seeking.

Many institutions staff those separately, with different training, session lengths and notes. Write them as separate lines: "Content tutoring in the calculus sequence" and "Academic coaching intakes for students on probation, 45-minute sessions against a semester plan." If you have done only one, say only that one.

Supplemental instruction deserves its own line, because it is a named model with a named owner. Sessions are peer-led and attached to a historically difficult course rather than to individual students. The International Center for Supplemental Instruction at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, which developed the model, reports that sections with SI support average a 13% reduction in D, F and withdrawal grades (International Center for Supplemental Instruction, accessed September 2026).

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Ten to fourteen entries in four groups: subject depth, tutoring practice, assessment, and systems.

List your education and certifications

Degrees first with the subject depth visible, then the certification tier and its awarding programme.

Adaptable resume education and certification example

Master of Science, Mathematics, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI, 2020. Coursework in real analysis, probability and mathematical statistics; two semesters as a teaching assistant for MATH 221.

Bachelor of Science, Mathematics, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI, 2018. Minor in economics.

CRLA International Tutor Training Program Certification, Level 3, awarded through Madison College Tutoring and Learning Services, 2023.

Supplemental Instruction Leader Training, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2017.

As an undergraduate, put education first and lead with the courses you completed at the grade the centre requires: most centres set a bar of an A or B, plus a faculty recommendation from that department.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear section headings, no photograph. Student employment systems parse these into a structured record before anyone reads them, and multi-column templates and graphics are where that parsing fails.

Do

Name the unit, not just the institution. Give course codes with one title spelled out. State the service model per job. Write your certification level with the awarding programme. Give contact hours somewhere on the page.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "CRLA certified" with no level and no programme. Do not list a subject you have not passed at the grade the centre requires. Do not claim a pass-rate improvement you cannot source to someone else's report. Do not describe a student, a disability or an accommodation.

Statistical insight

The college slice is the smallest and the lowest paid

Of the roughly 208,400 tutors employed in the United States in 2025, state colleges, universities and professional schools accounted for about 5% of employment, with a median annual wage of $35,190 against the $43,350 median for tutors overall (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data).

The pay gap is structural: most college tutoring hours are held by students on hourly student-employment rates rather than by salaried staff. The files that move into salaried professional and coordinator posts show certification tier, assessment work and supervision, not contact hours alone.

What salary you can expect as an academic tutor

The median annual wage for tutors was $43,350, or $20.84 an hour, as of May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $29,430 and the highest 10 percent more than $75,990 (BLS, May 2025).

Inside higher education the shape differs. Undergraduate peer tutors are paid on a student employment scale, often with a step for each CRLA level attained, which is the most common way a certification tier converts into money. Professional staff tutor posts, usually requiring a bachelor's or master's in the subject, sit above that with benefits, and coordinator posts move into administrative bands.

What a resume can move is the step and the band, and those are decided on documentation rather than interview impression.

Key takeaways for an academic tutor resume

  1. Name the unit and the service model, not just the institution and the word "tutoring".
  2. List course codes, because that is how a learning centre's schedule is built.
  3. Write CRLA certification as level plus awarding programme; the programme is the certified party.
  4. Put a contact-hour figure on the page.
  5. Keep content tutoring and academic coaching as separate lines.
  6. If you did supplemental instruction, name it and give attendance figures.
  7. Show that you stayed; semesters in one unit read as reliability in a field built on turnover.

Academic tutor resume questions, answered

How long should an academic tutor resume be?

One page as an undergraduate peer tutor or a new graduate. Two once you hold a graduate degree in the subject, a CRLA Level 2 or 3, and supervisory responsibility.

Is CRLA certification worth getting?

Yes. Many institutions attach a pay step to each level, so it converts into money directly. And because the College Reading and Learning Association certifies the training programme rather than the individual, holding a level tells a director exactly what curriculum you were trained against.

What do I write with no paid tutoring experience?

Write the unpaid work as work. A department help desk, a residence hall study table, a student organisation review session, a course you graded for. Give the course code, the format, the number of sessions and the group size. Then state the courses you passed at the grade the centre requires; at entry level that is the qualification being checked.

How do I show results if my centre does not track outcomes?

Use what exists: contact hours, distinct students seen, return rate across a term, attendance in a supplemental instruction section, wait times you reduced, tutors you trained.

Does an academic tutor resume differ from a private tutor resume?

Substantially. A private tutoring file is built on subjects, dosage and client outcomes. An academic tutor file is built on the unit, the service model, the catalogue courses and the certification tier, because you are placed into a staffing grid rather than matched to a family. Keep two versions.
