Summary

A tutor resume names which of the six kinds of tutoring work you do, then proves it with dosage: group size, sessions per week, weeks sustained and what moved. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the research finding that should shape how you write your bullets, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.

Tutor resume examples by experience level

A tutor resume is a one-page document that says which kind of tutoring you do, at what dosage, and what moved as a result.

Dosage is the word that matters. Tutoring is one of the best-evidenced interventions in education, but the evidence is specific: it works at small group sizes, several sessions a week, sustained over weeks, with the same tutor. Programmes that lose those conditions lose most of the effect. Your resume is the document that says whether you worked under the conditions that work.

Resume guide for a tutor resume

This guide and the corresponding tutor resume example will cover:

  • How to write a tutor resume, section by section
  • The six kinds of tutoring work and how each one is hired
  • Three adaptable summaries: peer tutor, school-based tutor and programme lead
  • Why dosage numbers belong in every bullet

How to write a tutor resume

Five sections: contact header, summary, tutoring experience, subjects and levels, and training or certification. One page.

The structure differs from a teaching resume in one important way. A teaching resume is organised by post. A tutor resume is organised by evidence, because the work is often part-time, contracted or spread across several employers at once, and a chronological list of five overlapping gigs reads as noise.

ElementWhat it meansWhy it is read
Group size1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, or largerThe single strongest predictor of effect
FrequencySessions per weekThree or more a week is the research standard
DurationWeeks or terms sustainedShort runs do not move anything
ConsistencySame tutor, same studentsContinuity is what the effect depends on
PlacementDuring the school day, or afterIn-day programmes reach the students who need it
Expert Tip

Write your dosage, because that is what the evidence is about

A meta-analysis of 96 randomised trials found an average tutoring effect of 0.37 standard deviations, with teacher tutors at 0.50, paraprofessional tutors at 0.40 and volunteer tutors at 0.21 (Nickow, Oreopoulos and Quan, NBER Working Paper 27476, July 2020).

A larger 2026 meta-analysis of 263 randomised trials found the same headline effect, 0.40, but showed it collapsing as programmes scale: 0.51 for programmes under 100 students, 0.30 at 100 to 399, 0.26 at 400 to 999, and 0.16 at 1,000 or more, attributed to rising student-to-tutor ratios, reduced dosage and implementation quality (Kraft, Schueler and Falken, Review of Educational Research, June 2026).

That finding is your resume's structure. The conditions that hold the effect are exactly the conditions worth documenting: small groups, three or more sessions a week, sustained across a term, the same tutor each time.

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you apply to a district or a national provider; both parse before a person reads.

Choosing the best resume format for a tutor resume

Reverse chronological if you have held two or three tutoring roles in sequence. A hybrid format, with a short results block above the timeline, works better if you have been running several concurrent engagements, which is normal in this field.

Do not use a purely functional format. Providers want to see continuity with the same students, and a format that hides dates hides exactly that.

Make use of a summary

Three or four lines: the kind of tutoring, the subject and level, the dosage, and one outcome.

School-based tutor adaptable resume summary example

High-dosage mathematics tutor with four years in Title I middle schools, working with groups of three, four days a week, during the school day, across a full academic year. Carried a caseload of 36 students in Grades 6 to 8; the group averaged 8 points of NWEA MAP growth above the district median in each of the last two years. Meet the federal paraprofessional requirement through an associate degree and hold CRLA Level 2 training.

Programme lead adaptable resume summary example

Tutoring programme coordinator with 10 years in the field and 4 running a district high-dosage programme of 22 tutors serving 610 students across seven schools. Held the average group at 1:3 and attendance at 87% while the programme scaled from two schools to seven, and rebuilt tutor onboarding around CRLA Level 1 and 2 content. Manage scheduling, data reporting and the funding transition from federal relief money to Title I and state grants.

Adaptable resume tutoring experience example

High-Dosage Mathematics Tutor, Grades 6 to 8, Keystone Tutoring Corps at Lincoln Middle School, Philadelphia, PA, September 2022 to Present

Tutor groups of three during the school day, four sessions a week, across a full academic year, with a fixed caseload of 36 students.

Sessions are aligned to the classroom's Illustrative Mathematics unit sequence and planned weekly with the two Grade 7 mathematics teachers.

The caseload averaged 8 points of NWEA MAP growth above the district median in each of the last two academic years.

Attendance at sessions held at 91%, against a programme average of 78%, through a check-in routine and direct family contact.

Trained four new tutors on session structure and progress logging.

List your subjects and levels precisely

Vagueness costs you here. A learning centre scheduling next week's roster needs to know exactly what they can put you in front of.

Adaptable resume subjects and levels example

Core subjects: Mathematics, Grades 6 to 12, through Algebra II and Precalculus. Introductory Statistics.

Test preparation: SAT Mathematics (own score 780), ACT Mathematics and Science.

Formats: 1:1, small group to 1:4, in person and online. Experience with in-day school-based delivery and after-school centre delivery.

Not offered: Calculus, Physics.

The last line is unusual and it works. Saying what you do not tutor reads as someone who takes the work seriously, and it saves both sides a wasted first session.

Show the training and certification that exist in this field

There is no state licence to tutor, so training is how you signal a standard.

Adaptable resume training and certification example

CRLA International Tutor Training Program Certification, Level 2, through the Temple University Learning Center, 2024. Level 1 completed 2023. Each level requires a minimum of 10 training hours and 25 tutoring hours.

Federal paraprofessional requirement met through an Associate of Arts, 2022, which satisfies the ESSA two-years-of-study route for Title I instructional roles.

Associate of Arts, Mathematics, Community College of Philadelphia, 2022

Training: Illustrative Mathematics session alignment (2025), Trauma-informed practice for tutors (2024), Child protection and mandated reporter (2026)

CRLA certifies training programmes rather than individuals, so write it the accurate way: trained to Level 2 through a CRLA-certified programme. Anyone who has been through it will notice you got that right.

Choose the right layout and design

One page, single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point. No photograph. If you tutor privately and want a rate card or testimonials, those belong on your own page and not on the resume you send to a district or a provider.

Do

Say which of the six kinds of tutoring you are applying for in the first line. Give group size, frequency and duration for every engagement. Use the assessment the employer already uses, by name. Show retention and attendance, since those are the operational numbers a provider worries about. State the paraprofessional route you meet if you are applying for a school-based post. Say which subjects you do not take.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "tutored students in various subjects", which is unschedulable. Do not name a student anywhere, including in a testimonial. Do not claim a grade change you did not see documented. Do not use "improved confidence" as your only outcome. Do not present a private rate card to an employer.

Tutor job market and outlook

A mid-sized occupation, flat overall, with unusually high churn and a funding story underneath it.

Statistical insight

The federal money that built this market has ended

More than 40% of school districts, and two thirds of the largest systems, planned to spend federal pandemic relief money on tutoring and academic coaching, an estimated $3.6 billion nationally (FutureEd, Georgetown University, April 2022).

The obligation deadline for that money was 30 September 2024. What replaced it is patchy: 23 states provide grant or formula funding that districts can put toward high-impact tutoring, 5 states require it for particular groups of students, and one, Tennessee, has folded it into ongoing formula funding (National Student Support Accelerator, April 2025).

Meanwhile household demand has not moved: 19% of parents said their child was receiving tutoring in October 2025 and a further 24% were looking for it, with parents reporting a willingness to pay an average of $357 a month (EdChoice, November 2025).

For your resume that means two things. School-based roles now live inside Title I and state grant budgets, so evidence of measurable growth is what keeps a programme funded and is what a coordinator will screen for. And the private and online side of the market is where the volume is: 31% of tutors work for private instruction providers and another 12% are self-employed (BLS, May 2025).

Where tutors work:

What salary you can expect as a tutor

The median wage for tutors was $20.84 an hour, or $43,350 a year, as of May 2025 (BLS). That annual figure assumes full-time hours, which a large share of tutors do not work, so read the hourly number as the real one.

Three things move it. Subject, where advanced mathematics, science and test preparation command a premium. Format, where private one-to-one pays most per hour and platform work least. And credential, where a teaching licence or a CRLA level lifts you out of the volunteer tier both in pay and in the roles you are eligible for, which matches the research finding that teacher and paraprofessional tutors produce roughly twice the effect of untrained volunteers.

For test preparation specifically, BLS notes that tutors "usually need to have scored highly on the standardized tests for which they help students prepare" (Occupational Outlook Handbook, August 2026). Put your own score on the page. It is the qualification in that corner of the market.

Key takeaways for a tutor resume

  1. Say which of the six kinds of tutoring you do, in the first line.
  2. Write dosage in every engagement: group size, sessions per week, weeks sustained.
  3. Name the assessment the employer already uses and give growth against it.
  4. Show attendance and retention; those are the numbers a coordinator lives on.
  5. State the paraprofessional route you meet for any school-based, Title I funded post.
  6. Write CRLA accurately: trained to Level X through a CRLA-certified programme.
  7. List your own test scores if you do test preparation, and list the subjects you do not take.

Tutor resume questions, answered

Do I need a certification to be a tutor?

No state requires a licence to tutor, and BLS lists no licensure requirement for the occupation. What exists is voluntary training: CRLA's International Tutor Training Program Certification is the standard in college learning centres, and the National Tutoring Association certifies individual tutors across three main levels. For a school-based role funded by Title I you usually need the federal paraprofessional bar instead: a high school diploma plus two years of study, an associate degree, or a passing score on a formal assessment such as the ParaPro.

How do I write a tutor resume with no paid experience?

Write the unpaid hours as engagements with the same detail: subject, level, group size, frequency, how many weeks, and what changed. Peer tutoring in a college learning centre, volunteer work with a literacy programme, a summer camp academic block, or regular help with a relative's coursework all count if you describe them in dosage terms. Then add any CRLA or provider training you have completed.

What results can I claim if I do not have test data?

Use what you actually observed and can defend: course grade movement over a stated period, assignment completion rates, retention or repeat bookings, attendance at your sessions, the share of students who exited an intervention tier, or a platform rating with the session count behind it. Avoid "improved confidence" as your only line, since every applicant writes it.

Should I list every subject I can tutor?

List what you can teach well, at the level you can teach it, and then say what you do not take. A long, undifferentiated list reads as someone who will be scheduled into a session they cannot run, which is the outcome a centre manager most wants to avoid.

Is online tutoring experience taken seriously?

Yes, and it should be described with the same operational numbers: total sessions, average rating, repeat-booking rate, platforms and tools, and whether the work was live video, asynchronous or chat-based. Online delivery is now an expected capability rather than an alternative, so if you have both in-person and online experience, say so in the header.
