Summary
A teacher assistant resume is a one-page document naming the setting you work in, the students you support and at what ratio, and how you meet the federal qualification requirement. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the distinction between general and one-to-one support that decides most vacancies, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.
Teacher Assistant resume examples by experience level
A teacher assistant resume is a one-page document that answers three things fast: what setting you work in, who you support and at what ratio, and how you meet the qualification requirement.
It is also the resume most often written too modestly. Assistants describe themselves as helping, and school offices hire on specifics: a one-to-one assignment with a student who has a behaviour plan is a different job from a general classroom assistant covering a Grade 2 room, and both are different from a special education aide running toileting and feeding protocols.

How to write a teacher assistant resume
Five sections: contact header, summary, experience, education and qualification, skills and certifications. One page, almost always.
The thing to get right first is the support model. Say it plainly for every role.
| Model | What it means | What a school reads from it |
|---|---|---|
| General classroom assistant | Supporting a whole class alongside the teacher | Flexible, useful across grades |
| One-to-one or dedicated aide | Assigned to a single student, usually on an IEP | Comfortable with a behaviour plan and close documentation |
| Special education aide | Small-group or self-contained support | Trained in de-escalation, often in personal care |
| Title I or intervention aide | Pulling small groups for reading or maths | Data-tracking and programme delivery |
| Bilingual aide | Language support and family interpretation | A language the building actually needs |
Name your qualification route explicitly
Federal rules require teacher assistants in Title I programmes to hold one of three things: two years of college, an associate degree or higher, or a passing score on a formal state or local assessment such as the ParaPro Assessment or a state paraprofessional exam.
School offices check this before anything else, and a resume that leaves it implicit creates work for them. Write which route you took: "ParaPro Assessment, passed 2024, score 467", or "Associate of Arts, Child Development, 2023", or "64 semester credits completed, Phoenix College".
If you hold a CDA credential, a state paraprofessional certificate or a substitute permit, name those too. They widen the vacancies you are eligible for.
Run the file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before applying; larger districts parse these the same way they parse teaching applications.
Choosing the best resume format
Reverse chronological, one page. Two pages only if you have a decade of it and have been a lead assistant.
If your experience is fragmented across short assignments, which is common, group by district rather than by school. Eight schools under one district reads as range; eight separate entries reads as instability.

Make use of a summary
Three lines: setting, years, who you support and at what ratio, and one thing that got better.
Teacher assistant with a passing ParaPro Assessment score and two years supporting K-2 classrooms through a district substitute pool. Ran daily small-group phonics for groups of four and tracked progress-monitoring data for 26 students. CPR and first aid certified, trained in CPI de-escalation, and conversational in Spanish.
Special education teacher assistant with six years in self-contained K-5 classrooms, currently supporting six students with moderate to severe needs at a 1:2 ratio. Implement behaviour intervention plans and collect daily ABC data for the school psychologist, and helped cut one student's classroom exits from 11 a week to 2 across a semester. CPI certified and trained in assistive communication devices.
Lead teacher assistant with 11 years in elementary settings, 4 of them coordinating a team of nine assistants across a K-5 building. Rebuilt the assistant coverage schedule so every self-contained room holds its ratio through lunch and specials, which removed 14 hours a week of uncovered time. Train new assistants on de-escalation and data collection, and hold an Associate of Arts in Child Development.
Right vs wrong: the same summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Special education teacher assistant with six years in self-contained K-5 classrooms at a 1:2 ratio. | Caring and patient classroom helper who loves working with children. |
| Implement behaviour intervention plans and collect daily ABC data for the school psychologist. | Assist the teacher with daily classroom activities and student needs. |
| Helped cut one student's classroom exits from 11 a week to 2 across a semester. | Help students succeed and reach their potential. |
The right column describes a job a school is trying to fill. The left column describes goodwill, which every applicant has.
Outline your experience
School, district, setting, grade range, support model, ratio, and dates. Then three to five bullets with numbers in them.
| Instead of | Use |
|---|---|
| Assisted the teacher in a classroom of 24 students | Supported a self-contained K-2 classroom of 9 students with moderate needs at a 1:2 assistant ratio |
| Helped students with their work | Ran three daily small-group phonics rotations of four students each and logged progress-monitoring data weekly |
| Worked with a student with special needs | Implemented a behaviour intervention plan for a dedicated assignment, collecting daily ABC data for the school psychologist |
| Supervised students during lunch and recess | Covered lunch, recess and two specials daily for a 26-student room, holding ratio through every transition |
Special Education Teacher Assistant, Self-Contained K-5, Greenway Elementary, Denver Public Schools, Denver, CO, August 2020 to Present
Support six students with moderate to severe needs at a 1:2 assistant ratio across academics, transitions and personal care.
Implement behaviour intervention plans written by the school psychologist and collect daily ABC data; one student's classroom exits fell from 11 a week to 2 across a semester.
Run three daily small-group rotations for reading and number sense, with weekly progress monitoring logged in the district system.
Train new assistants on de-escalation and data collection; four of the five I have trained are still in the building.
Write about the work, never about the child. No names, no initials, no diagnosis, no detail from an IEP or a behaviour record. "One student's classroom exits fell from 11 a week to 2" describes what you did. Anything more specific describes a child in a document that will be emailed around a district office.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Eight to twelve entries covering instructional support, behaviour and safety, and the systems you use.
Instructional support: Small-group reading rotations, Number sense intervention, Progress monitoring, Accommodation implementation, Assistive communication devices
Behaviour and safety: Behaviour intervention plan implementation, ABC data collection, CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, CPR and first aid, Personal care and toileting protocols
Systems: PowerSchool, Google Classroom, Seesaw, district IEP data portal
Languages: English (native), Spanish (conversational)
List the education and qualification that carry the application
Qualification route first, then any degree or credits, then certifications with dates.
ParaPro Assessment, ETS, passed 2022, score 471
Associate of Arts, Child Development, Community College of Denver, Denver, CO, 2021
Colorado Substitute Authorization #SA-88214, valid through 2028
Certifications: CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (2025), CPR and First Aid, American Red Cross (2026), Child Development Associate (CDA) credential (2023)
Choose the right layout and design
One page, single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point. Assistant vacancies attract high application volume and a school office reads each file for under a minute.
Say the support model and the ratio for every role, because that is the fact a school is matching against. Name your qualification route explicitly. Give CPR, first aid and de-escalation certifications with their dates, since several of them expire. Say which languages you can use with families. Keep it to one page.
Do not write "assisted the teacher" and stop; every applicant did that. Do not name a child, give initials, name a diagnosis, or quote anything from an IEP or a behaviour log. Do not list a certification without its date, since an expired CPR card is a compliance problem rather than a credential. Do not use graphics or a photo, and do not pad the page to two.
Teacher assistant job market and outlook
A very large occupation with the highest replacement demand in education, and no growth.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Teacher assistant jobs, 2025 | 1,463,000 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 0% (little or no change) |
| Projected annual openings | ~176,200 |
| Typical entry-level education | Some college, no degree |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections.
Where those jobs sit, and what each setting pays:
| Setting | Share of employment | Median annual wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Elementary and secondary schools, local | 72% | $36,970 |
| Child daycare services | 10% | $34,920 |
| Elementary and secondary schools, private | 9% | $37,090 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics.
176,200 openings a year against a flat headcount is the highest turnover ratio in the education occupations. For your resume that means two things. Schools are buying stability, so any run of years in one building is worth stating plainly. And because the vacancies never stop, the assistants who get the better assignments are the ones whose paperwork shows a specialisation: special education, behaviour support, a language, or a certification the building needs.
What salary you can expect
The median annual wage for teacher assistants was $36,780 as of May 2025 (BLS), with private schools slightly ahead of public at $37,090 against $36,970, and childcare settings behind at $34,920.
Most assistant pay runs on a district hourly scale, often with a higher rate for special education, one-to-one and bilingual assignments. That differential is usually not in the posting and is worth asking about directly. Documenting the certification that qualifies you for it, on the resume, is what makes the conversation possible.
Key takeaways for a teacher assistant resume
- Say the support model and the ratio for every role; that is the fact schools match against.
- Name your qualification route explicitly: ParaPro, associate degree, or two years of college credits.
- Replace "assisted the teacher" with what you ran, for how many students, and what changed.
- Give every safety certification with its date, because several expire.
- Show a run of years in one building, since turnover in this role is the highest in education.
- Name the specialisation that earns a differential: special education, behaviour, a language.
- Never name a child, give initials, or quote an IEP or behaviour record.

Teacher assistant resume questions, answered
What qualifications do I need to be a teacher assistant?
In Title I programmes, federal rules require one of three routes: two years of college, an associate degree or higher, or a passing score on a formal assessment such as the ParaPro. Requirements outside Title I vary by district. Whichever route you took, name it on the resume, because it is the first thing a school office checks.
How long should a teacher assistant resume be?
One page. Two only if you have a decade in the role and have led a team of assistants. School offices read a large volume of these and the second page rarely gets there.
How do I describe the work without naming a student?
Describe what you ran and what changed at the level of the assignment: the ratio, the group size, the number of rotations, the drop in classroom exits or the rise in progress-monitoring scores. "One student's classroom exits fell from 11 a week to 2" is about your work. Initials, a diagnosis or a quoted IEP goal is about a child, and does not belong on a document that circulates by email.
What is the difference between a teacher assistant, a paraprofessional and a teacher aide?
Mostly the district's own vocabulary for the same role, though paraprofessional often implies the formal Title I qualification and a one-to-one or special education assignment. Use whichever term the posting uses, and name your qualification route either way.
How do I get a higher-paid assignment?
Most districts pay a differential for special education, one-to-one and bilingual assignments, and it is frequently absent from the posting. Hold and document the certification that qualifies you: CPI or equivalent de-escalation, assistive communication training, or a language you can use with families. Then ask about the differential directly at offer stage.
