Mr. Gideon Fairhurst Crewing Kestrel Marine Logistics New Orleans, United States

Application for Able Seafarer, Kestrel Marine Logistics

Dear Mr. Fairhurst,

I am applying for the Able Seafarer position advertised with Kestrel Marine Logistics. I hold Able Seafarer-Unlimited with RFPNW and Lifeboat Operator endorsements, and 2,460 documented days of deck service across inland towing, offshore supply and ocean routes.

The bulk of that time is 840 days on platform supply vessels of about 2,900 gross tons in the Gulf of Mexico on even time rotation, and 720 days on ocean routes aboard a roll on roll off vessel of about 31,000 gross tons. I stand a six on, six off watch as helmsman and lookout, act as deck lead during bulk and fluid transfer operations, and own the deck preservation and inspection schedule for mooring gear, deck crane and life saving appliances. As fire team leader on a crew of nine, I closed out eighteen months of fire, abandon ship and enclosed space drills with no overdue items at the last internal audit.

Your posting says the billet runs a 28 and 14 rotation on the Gulf coastwise trade with occasional Caribbean voyages, which is close to the work I already know. I would also expect to carry the training side of the deck department, since I currently sign off new ratings on rigging, mooring and enclosed space entry procedures.

My Merchant Mariner Credential is valid to March 2029, my TWIC to July 2028 and my STCW medical certificate to May 2027. I am available for a crew change from 6 October and will travel to join. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Kaleo Mikkelsen

Summary

A seaman cover letter tells a crewing office four things: the endorsements on your Merchant Mariner Credential, your documented sea time in days, when your TWIC and medical certificate expire, and the rotation you will accept. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, the openings that work, what to send when you hold credentials but no sea time yet, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay for water transportation work.

Seaman cover letter examples by experience level

A seaman cover letter is a one page letter answering four questions a crewing office has before it has any others: which endorsements you hold, how many documented days of sea service you have and on what, when your credentials expire, and which rotation you will take.

In practice, crewing is a scheduling problem under a legal constraint. In other words, somebody has to fill a billet on a fixed crew change date with a person whose paperwork will survive an inspection. As a result, a letter that answers that in the first paragraph is doing the reader's job for them, which is the whole point of a cover letter in this industry.

Guide to a seaman cover letter

In short, this guide and the corresponding seaman cover letter example will cover:

  • First, how to structure the letter, paragraph by paragraph
  • Then, why the credential line belongs in the first two sentences
  • Also, a full adaptable letter you can rewrite for your own service
  • Finally, how to write availability, rotation and crew change honestly
  • What to send when you have credentials but no sea time yet

How to write a seaman cover letter

Expert Tip

Put the three expiry dates in the closing paragraph

Three documents, three separate clocks, and a crewing coordinator has to check all of them before you can join.

A Merchant Mariner Credential is valid for a term of five years, and adding an endorsement does not change the expiration date (U.S. Coast Guard National Maritime Center, Merchant Mariner Credentials FAQ, dated 23 January 2026). A TWIC is valid for five years (Transportation Security Administration, accessed September 2026). A medical certificate is valid for up to two years from the date of examination for a mariner sailing under an STCW endorsement, and up to five years for a national mariner who is not (National Maritime Center, Merchant Mariner Medical Certificate FAQ, dated 7 April 2026).

Write the three expiry months in one sentence and you have removed the reason most files get set aside for later.

Openings that work

In practice, a reader can check everything in the right column against a sea service letter and a copy of the credential. That is the only kind of sentence worth spending a paragraph on.

Write the rotation honestly

Time away is structural in this job rather than a detail of it, and a letter that is vague about rotation creates a problem two weeks into a hitch rather than avoiding one.

What to stateWhy the crewing office needs it
The rotation you will acceptThe billet already has a fixed crew change cycle
Whether you will travel to joinJoining ports change at short notice
Your earliest available crew change dateRosters are built weeks ahead
Any rotation you will not takeA refusal at the gangway costs more than a refusal in a letter

Statistical insight

This is a small occupation, so the letter competes on credentials

Water transportation work is a small field: 85,900 jobs in 2025, projected to grow 4 percent and add 3,100 jobs by 2035, with about 8,600 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections, published 27 August 2026).

Pay inside it tracks the credential ladder rather than the job search. Sailors and marine oilers had a median annual wage of $51,520 as of May 2025, against $92,460 for captains, mates and pilots of water vessels and $109,530 for ship engineers (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). The group median across all four occupations was $71,860.

A cover letter cannot move you up that ladder. What it can do is get your documented days in front of the person who decides which billet you are offered, and make the next tranche of days count toward the endorsement above the one you hold.

What to send when you have credentials but no sea time

However, an entry file is not a weak file, it is a different one. Lead with the documents, because they are what an operator would otherwise have to wait for.

An MMC carrying Ordinary Seaman and Wiper endorsements, a TWIC, a current medical certificate and STCW Basic Training is a complete set for an entry rating, and BLS records that there are no educational requirements for entry-level sailors and marine oilers (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, published 27 August 2026).

Then write the transferable work in the language of the deck: shift work, work at height, confined spaces, rigging, painting and preservation, machinery, hand and power tools, and any first aid or firefighting training. Close with the rotation you will accept and a clear statement that you will travel to join.

Do

Name the billet and your highest endorsement in the first two sentences. Give total documented days, then break them down by vessel type and waters. State your watch pattern. Give one safety or reliability fact you could evidence. Put the three expiry dates in the closing. Say which rotation you will accept and from when. Address a named person at the crewing office.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "all documents current" instead of dates. Do not claim an endorsement that is still an application; say "application submitted" with the date. Do not count sea time in years when the regulation counts days. Do not leave a long gap between hitches unexplained. Do not send the same letter to an inland operator and a deep sea operator; the vessels, the tonnage and the rotation are different arguments.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. PDF unless the portal says otherwise, named for yourself and the billet: kaleo-mikkelsen-able-seafarer-cover-letter.pdf.

Address a person. The operator's careers page or the posting itself usually names the crewing coordinator; for this reason, a named salutation on a file that is otherwise specific costs nothing.

Keep every figure identical to the one on your resume, especially the day totals and the expiry dates. Our seaman resume example is written with the numbers used here, and a mismatch between the two documents is the first thing a careful reader will notice.

Key takeaways

  1. First, open with the billet, your highest endorsement and your total documented days.
  2. Then break the days down by vessel type, tonnage and waters.
  3. Next, state your watch pattern and one safety or reliability fact.
  4. Put the MMC, TWIC and medical certificate expiry months in the closing.
  5. Say which rotation you will accept and your earliest crew change date.
  6. Finally, write a different letter for inland, offshore and deep sea operators.
  7. If you have no sea time yet, lead with the documents and the training.

Seaman cover letter questions, answered

How long should a seaman cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. Crewing coordinators read these against a roster with dates on it, and length does not read as effort.

Do I need a cover letter if the operator uses an application portal?

Attach one wherever there is a field for it. The portal collects the same structured fields from everyone. The letter is the only place you can state the rotation you will accept, your earliest crew change date and what you are next eligible for.

Should I list every certificate in the letter?

No. The letter names your highest endorsement, RFPNW if you hold it, and the three expiry dates. The full STCW and company training list belongs on the resume, where a reader can scan it without losing the thread of the letter.

How do I explain a long gap between hitches?

Plainly and in one sentence. Shore leave between contracts, training, a medical certificate renewal, a family reason or a period out of the industry are all ordinary. An unexplained twelve month gap invites a worse assumption than any of them.

Is it worth applying to deep sea work from inland experience?

Yes, and the letter is where you make that case. Deep sea, coastal and Great Lakes water transportation pays a median of $79,420 against $65,660 in inland water transportation (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025), so the move is worth arguing for. Name the endorsement that makes you eligible, the ocean service days you already hold, and the fact that you will travel to join.
