Application for Part Time Crew Member, Southside Hardware

Dear Ms. Fitzhugh,

I am applying for the part time crew job at Southside Hardware. I am a senior at Stringers Ridge High School and my last bell is 3:05, so I can work Monday to Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 to 5:00, which is 16 hours a week. Track starts 1 March and takes my weekday afternoons until 15 May, and for those eleven weeks I would move those hours to Friday evening and Saturday.

I have worked at a neighborhood grocery since January and I lead the Saturday close with three crew members: front end reset, produce pull, drawer count and handover to the duty manager. Closing has finished on time every Saturday in the eight weeks since I took it on, after we moved the produce pull earlier in the evening. Before that I spent a year on the crew at an ice cream shop, 12 hours a week in term, and I did not miss a scheduled shift in eleven months.

Your store is on my bus line, so a 4:00 start on a school day is realistic rather than something I would be scrambling to make. I would rather be trained on the paint counter or key cutting than stay on a register I already know how to run.

I hold a food handler certificate and a current first aid and CPR card, and I can start any week from the twenty-third. Thank you for reading this.

Sincerely,Oluwaseun Adebayo

Say your last bell and your ride home

A manager does not know when your school day ends, how long it takes you to get to the store, or whether you have a way home after 9:00 p.m. Those three facts decide whether they can schedule you, and a letter that states them plainly saves everybody a week.

Write it as one sentence: "My last bell is 3:05 and the store is fifteen minutes away on the bus, so a 4:00 start works on any school day."

Then add the season line. "Track runs 1 March to 15 May and takes my weekday afternoons; I would move those hours to Friday evening and Saturday for those eleven weeks." A manager can plan around that. They cannot plan around a surprise in March.

What counts as evidence when you have no paid job

Everything you do on a schedule counts, as long as you write the schedule with it.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence

  • A volunteer shift you keep3 hours every Saturday at a library branch for two years
  • A teamCross country, three seasons, practice four days a week for twelve weeks each fall
  • Something you were trusted withRan the reading program sign in table on my own
  • A skill you can proveFood handler certificate, February 2026

Hours, seasons and the federal limits

What you can promise depends partly on your age while school is in session.

Under Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division Fact Sheet #43, revised December 2016, a 14 or 15 year old may work "no more than 3 hours on a school day, including Fridays; no more than 8 hours on a nonschool day; no more than 18 hours during a week when school is in session", and only between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. From 16, those hour limits no longer apply: 16 and 17 year olds may work unlimited hours in occupations other than those declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor. However, state rules can be stricter, and your employer follows whichever rule is stricter.

For this reason, say the number that fits your age and your timetable, and let the manager see that you know it. For example, an applicant who writes "14 hours a week, three hours on school days" reads as someone who has already checked, which is a small thing that changes the tone of the whole letter.

Expert tip

What the youth labor market looked like this summer

In July 2026 there were 21.3 million employed 16 to 24 year olds, an employment population ratio of 53.8 percent, and a youth unemployment rate of 9.1 percent (BLS, Employment and Unemployment Among Youth, published 20 August 2026).

The unemployment rate for young workers is well above the rate for the workforce as a whole, so more applicants are chasing each opening than an adult applicant would face. At the same time, more than twenty million young people are employed, so the employers you are writing to hire people your age as a matter of routine.

Both facts point the same way. The competition is other applicants like you, and the thing that separates two of you is which one made the rota easier to fill.

Do

  • Put the hours in the first three lines.
  • Say your last bell and how you get there.
  • Give the dates a season takes your afternoons.
  • Name one thing you were trusted to do alone.
  • Say which certificates you already hold.
  • Give a date you can start.

Don’t

  • Do not write "available anytime", because it stops being true in the second week.
  • Do not promise a shift that ends after your ride home does.
  • Do not apologize for your age; the job was posted for someone with an after school schedule.
  • Do not copy the same letter to six stores.
  • Do not write more than one page, or even much more than half of one.

Length, format and handing it in

Half a page to one page, four short paragraphs, 200 to 300 words. If you are applying online, attach it as a PDF named for yourself: oluwaseun-adebayo-cover-letter.pdf.

On paper, print it plainly, staple it behind your resume and hand it to a manager rather than leaving it on a counter.

Keep the hours in the letter identical to the ones on your resume. Our high school student resume example is built on the same block used here.

Key takeaways

  1. To start, open with the job, your school and the hours your timetable leaves free.
  2. Say your last bell and how you get to the store.
  3. Then give the dates a sports season changes your availability.
  4. Also, name one thing someone trusted you with, with a number and a time frame.
  5. List the certificates you already hold, because they save the employer money.
  6. In addition, keep it to four short paragraphs and hand it to a manager.
  7. Finally, match the hours to the block on your resume.

High school student cover letter questions, answered

How long should a high school student cover letter be?

Half a page to one page, four short paragraphs, 200 to 300 words. A manager is reading it near a till, standing up, between other things. Short and specific wins.

Do I need a cover letter for a part time job?

Not always, and it still helps. Most of these applications are a form that has nowhere to put your last bell, your season dates or the fact that you have closed a store. A short letter is the only place those go.

What do I write if I have never had a job?

Write the commitment you have kept longest. A two year library shift, three seasons on a team, eighteen months of babysitting for the same families. Give the hours a week, how long you have done it, and one thing you were trusted to do without being watched.

Should I say how old I am?

Say your grade and your school rather than your age, and then give the hours you can work. If you are 14 or 15, saying so is useful, because the federal limits apply to you and the manager has to schedule around them anyway. Being straightforward about it is faster than having the conversation in week two.

Who do I address it to?

The store manager, by name if you can get it. Ask at the counter, or look at the store's page. If nobody will tell you, "Dear Hiring Manager" is fine for these jobs and nobody holds it against you.
