Application for the Whitfield Environmental Studies Scholarship

Dear Members of the Selection Committee,

I am applying for the Whitfield Environmental Studies Scholarship as an incoming first-year student intending to major in environmental engineering. I found the scholarship through your watershed research station on the American River, which is a ten-minute drive from the high school where I have spent three years running a composting programme.

That programme started as one bin in our cafeteria in my sophomore year. It now runs at three campuses in our district, diverts roughly 6,000 pounds of organic waste a year, and is funded through 2028 after I presented the results to the district board. Getting there meant writing an operating guide two other schools adopted and securing a $1,200 sustainability grant, which was the first grant application I had ever written.

What draws me to your programme specifically is that the research station takes undergraduates in their second year rather than their fourth. I would like to work on soil nutrient recovery, which is the question my state science fair project ran into and could not answer with the equipment a high school has.

Thank you for considering my application. I am reachable at maya.okafor@example.com and would be glad to answer any questions.

Sincerely,Maya Okafor

A college admissions cover letter is a short letter that goes with an application, a scholarship form or a supplementary submission, and does one thing: name a specific reason for that specific school, backed by something you have actually done.

Before the how, the harder question.

Should you send one at all?

Usually not with a standard application. The Common App has no cover letter field, and adding an unrequested one to a college that did not ask reads as not having followed instructions.

These are the cases where a letter genuinely belongs.

SituationSend one?
Scholarship applicationYes, almost always. Many ask for one outright
Honors college or a special programme with its own formYes, if the form allows a letter or personal statement
Transfer applicationOften. Your reason for moving is the whole question
Deferred or waitlistedYes, as a letter of continued interest, and it matters
Emailing an admissions officer with a genuine questionYes, and keep it to four sentences
Summer research programme or internshipYes. These behave like job applications
A standard first-year application that did not askNo

How to write a college admissions cover letter

Four short paragraphs: why this school, what you have done, what you would do there, and a close. Under 350 words.

ParagraphIts job

  1. OpeningWhat you are applying for, and one specific thing about the school or programme
  2. EvidenceOne activity or project, with what changed because of you
  3. FitHow that connects to something they actually offer, named

Expert tip

Name something only a reader could verify you found

"Your beautiful campus and excellent reputation" is the sentence every letter contains. It tells the reader you have looked at a rankings page.

Name a lab, a course, a field station, a faculty member's work, a specific programme requirement. "Your watershed research station on the American River" is checkable, and it means you spent twenty minutes in their course catalogue rather than five on their homepage. That is the entire difference between a letter that helps and one that does nothing.

What the numbers say about the reader

Expert tip

Why the specific sentence matters more every year

Common App reported 1,527,328 distinct first-year applicants in the 2025-26 season, submitting 10,786,782 applications, an average of 7.06 applications per applicant and up 4% on the previous year (Common App, End-of-Season Report, 2025-26).

Seven applications each means the reader is looking at a great many letters that could have been sent to any of the seven. It also means demonstrated interest is doing real work: 16% of colleges rated a student's interest in attending as of considerable importance in NACAC's Fall 2023 survey, which is more than counselor or teacher recommendations. One verifiable, school-specific sentence is the cheapest way to show it.

Letters of continued interest are different

If you have been deferred or waitlisted, the letter has a narrower job: confirm you would attend, add what has changed since you applied, and stop.

Do

  • Say plainly that the college remains your first choice and that you would enrol if admitted, but only if it is true.
  • Add what is genuinely new since your application: a semester grade, an award, a completed project, a new responsibility.
  • Keep it to 250 words and send it once, through whatever channel the college specified.

Don’t

  • Do not argue with the decision or ask why.
  • Do not send a second letter, or a third; several colleges say plainly that repeated contact hurts.
  • Do not tell more than one college it is your first choice.
  • Do not have a parent write or send it, which admissions offices recognise immediately and read as a signal about the student rather than the parent.

Length, format and sending it

Under 350 words, one page, plain formatting. PDF unless the portal asks otherwise, named yourself: maya-okafor-scholarship-letter.pdf.

If the form has a text box rather than an upload, paste the letter without formatting and check the paragraph breaks survived. Use your own email address rather than a parent's, and use one you check.

Pair it with a resume carrying the same activities. Our college admissions resume example uses the same programme and the same figures, so the two documents agree.

Key takeaways

  1. Do not send a cover letter with a standard application that did not ask for one.
  2. Do send one for scholarships, honors programmes, transfers, deferrals and research placements.
  3. Name something specific and verifiable about the school, not its reputation.
  4. Use one activity with a real outcome rather than a summary of everything.
  5. Connect it to something they actually offer, named from their own catalogue.
  6. Keep it under 350 words and write it yourself.
  7. For a letter of continued interest, add only what is new and send it once.

Write your letter in 10 minutes and keep the activities matching your resume.

College admissions cover letter questions, answered

Do colleges want a cover letter with an application?

Generally no. The Common App has no cover letter field, and sending an unrequested one to a college that did not ask for it works against you. Scholarships, honors programmes, transfer applications, research placements and letters of continued interest are the cases where a letter is expected or explicitly allowed.

How long should a college admissions cover letter be?

Under 350 words, one page, four short paragraphs. A letter of continued interest should be shorter still, around 250 words.

What is a letter of continued interest?

A short letter sent after a deferral or a waitlist decision, confirming that you would enrol if admitted and adding what has genuinely changed since you applied: a semester grade, an award, a finished project. Send it once, through the channel the college specified, and never argue with the decision.

Can my parent help write my cover letter?

They can read it. They should not write it. Admissions readers see thousands of these and an adult's voice in a seventeen-year-old's letter is obvious, at which point the letter is telling them something about the family rather than about you. Ask a parent or teacher for a proofread instead.

What should I write if I have not done anything impressive?

Write about one thing you kept doing. A job at fifteen hours a week alongside school, caring for a younger sibling, a project you have run for two years with nobody asking you to. Duration and responsibility are what readers are looking for, and both are more common than the kind of achievement that photographs well.
