Summary
An accountant resume is a one-to-two page document that proves ownership of a ledger, a close cycle or an audit, with the volume and the accuracy attached. This guide gives you a full accountant resume example, three adaptable summaries by level, the systems O*NET flags as in demand, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook data for the 2024-34 decade.
Accountant resume examples by experience level
An accountant resume is a one-to-two page document that proves ownership of a ledger, a close cycle or an audit, with the volume and the accuracy attached. Hiring managers in accounting are hiring against risk. They want evidence that nothing broke on your watch, and that when something did, you found it.
The occupation is steady and large: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 1,579,800 accountant and auditor jobs as of 2024, projects 5% growth through 2034 for a gain of 72,800 positions, and expects about 124,200 openings a year. Demand is not the problem. Standing out among several hundred applications with near-identical qualifications is.
This accountant resume example and guide covers public and private accounting, tax, audit and controllership, from staff accountant through controller.
Resume guide for an accountant resume
This resume guide and the corresponding accountant resume example will cover the following:
- How to write an accountant resume that reads as risk evidence, not duties
- Choosing the right resume format for an accountant
- How to add your contact information and CPA line
- Using an accountant resume summary at staff, senior and controller level
- Adding your accounting experience with defensible volume and accuracy metrics
- Listing education, the 150-hour rule, CPA status and certifications
- Picking the right resume design and layout
- What the accounting job market looks like and what salary you can expect
How to write an accountant resume
An accountant resume needs six blocks in this order: contact header with CPA status, professional summary, professional experience, technical systems, education and licensure, and certifications. Systems get their own block, because in accounting hiring, the ERP you know is a scheduling decision.
Here is why that matters more than it appears. A company running NetSuite that hires a NetSuite accountant is productive in week two. The same company hiring an equally skilled Sage accountant is productive in month two. Hiring managers screen for this explicitly, and a resume that says "ERP systems" instead of naming them is being read as "not the one we run".
The second thing to get right is the unit of accomplishment. Accountants describe processes: reconciled accounts, prepared journal entries, assisted with month-end close. Every accountant does all three. What differentiates you is the size of what you owned and how well it held: the number of entities you closed, the days it took, the size of the balance sheet, the audit adjustments that came back.
Honing your accounting resume for the ATS
Jobscan's 2026 ATS Usage Report found 97.4% of Fortune 500 companies (487 of 500) run a detectable applicant tracking system, with Workday and SuccessFactors covering 52.4% between them. Public accounting firms and corporate finance departments filter heavily at this stage.
Write standards and credentials in both forms once: "Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)", "International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)", "Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX)", "Certified Public Accountant (CPA)". Postings use one or the other, not both.
Name systems exactly as the vendor writes them: "NetSuite", "SAP S/4HANA", "Oracle Fusion", "Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central", "Sage Intacct", "Workday Financials". Close enough is not close enough for a string match.
Paste the job description into the free Rezoom ATS resume checker to see which of those terms your resume is missing.
Choosing the best resume format for an accountant
Use reverse-chronological format. Accounting hiring runs on verifiable continuity, and a format that obscures dates raises exactly the question you do not want raised.
Two situations need a small adjustment:
- Public accounting seniors moving to industry should translate client work into scope: instead of listing clients by name, describe the portfolio: "audited 11 clients with revenues from $40M to $600M across manufacturing and SaaS", which conveys range without breaching confidentiality.
- Accountants returning after a career break should keep reverse-chronological order and state the break in one neutral line with dates, then foreground current CPE and any software refresh. Hiding it costs more than naming it.
| Format | Best for | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse-chronological | Nearly every accountant, at every level | None, this is what hiring managers expect |
| Reverse-chronological with a client-portfolio block | Public accounting, audit and tax seniors | Describe portfolio scale, never confidential client detail |
| Combination | Career changers into accounting, returners | Only works if prior roles keep their dates |
Include your contact information
An accountant resume header needs five things: name with CPA or equivalent post-nominal, target title with specialisation, phone, professional email, and city and state.
CPA status goes after your name. It is the field's most-searched single string and putting it anywhere else costs you first-pass matches.

If you are not yet licensed, state the position precisely rather than leaving it blank: "CPA candidate, 3 of 4 sections passed (FAR, REC, AUD), 150 credit hours complete." Hiring managers plan around exam schedules and will treat a specific status as an asset. Silence gets read as no progress.
Make use of an accountant resume summary
An accountant resume summary is three to four lines naming your licensure status, your specialisation, your years of experience, the size of the operation you support, and one measured outcome.
Size is the missing variable on most accounting resumes. "Senior accountant with seven years of experience" is unplaceable. "Senior accountant supporting a $180M multi-entity manufacturer across four legal entities" tells a controller immediately whether you can handle their environment.
Staff accountant with 150 credit hours complete and two CPA sections passed, supporting month-end close for a $22M services business. Own 40+ balance sheet reconciliations and the fixed asset subledger, contributing to a close cycle shortened from 9 to 6 business days. Proficient in NetSuite, Excel to the level of index-match and pivot modelling, and Bill.com.
CPA with seven years in corporate accounting supporting a $180M multi-entity manufacturer across four legal entities and two currencies. Own the consolidated close, revenue recognition under ASC 606, and the annual audit workpaper package; reduced audit adjustments from 11 to 2 across three cycles. Led the NetSuite implementation for the revenue module.
Controller with 14 years in accounting and 5 years leading a 9-person team for a $340M private-equity-backed group across seven entities. Cut the consolidated close from 12 to 5 business days while absorbing two acquisitions, and delivered three consecutive clean audits with no material weaknesses. Built the SOX-readiness control framework ahead of a planned exit.
Right vs wrong: the same accountant summary, twice
Controllers read an accounting summary to work out whether you can handle their environment. Entity count, revenue size and close cycle answer that; adjectives do not.
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| CPA with seven years in corporate accounting supporting a $180M multi-entity manufacturer across four legal entities. | Detail-oriented accounting professional with strong analytical and organisational skills. |
| Own the consolidated close, revenue recognition under ASC 606, and the annual audit workpaper package. | Experienced in accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger and month-end close. |
| Reduced auditor-proposed adjustments from 11 to 2 across three consecutive cycles. | Proficient in Microsoft Excel and various accounting software packages. |
The left-hand column tells a controller the size of the ledger you can carry and how well it held. The right-hand column describes the job title, which the reader already knows.
Outline your accountant experience
List each role with company, industry, revenue size, city and state, title and dates. Under each, write four to six bullets, and attach a volume, a cycle time or an accuracy figure to each.
Accounting is unusually rich in defensible numbers, and accounting resumes use almost none of them. Entity count, revenue supported, transaction volume, reconciliation count, close cycle in business days, audit adjustments, days sales outstanding, error and exception rates, dollar value of recoveries or savings found, every one of these is verifiable and every one of them separates you from a page of duties.
| Instead of | Use |
|---|---|
| Performed month-end close activities | Own the consolidated month-end close for four legal entities across two currencies, cutting the cycle from 9 to 6 business days over 18 months |
| Reconciled general ledger accounts | Own 120+ balance sheet reconciliations under a 3-day post-close deadline, with zero aged reconciling items over $5,000 for eight consecutive quarters |
| Assisted with the annual audit | Prepared and defended the full audit workpaper package for a $180M consolidation, reducing auditor adjustments from 11 to 2 across three cycles |
| Processed accounts payable invoices | Rebuilt the three-way match workflow across 1,400 monthly invoices, cutting duplicate-payment exceptions by 78% and recovering $164K in the first year |
Senior Accountant, Meridian Industrial Group ($180M manufacturer), Dallas, TX, May 2021 to Present
Own the consolidated month-end close for four legal entities across two currencies, reducing the cycle from 9 to 6 business days over 18 months while absorbing one acquisition.
Own revenue recognition under ASC 606 for a $180M book across contract, subscription and milestone revenue streams; wrote the accounting memo adopted as the group's standing policy.
Prepare and defend the annual audit workpaper package; auditor-proposed adjustments fell from 11 to 2 across three consecutive cycles with no material weaknesses identified.
Led the NetSuite revenue module implementation across 3 entities and 14 users, delivered on schedule with parallel-run variance under 0.2%.
Supervise two staff accountants, both promoted within 24 months.
Every figure there is one you could walk an interviewer through without disclosing anything confidential. Use ranges or percentages where the exact number is protected. "A client portfolio with revenues from $40M to $600M" says what you need without naming anyone.
Build a snapshot of your key accountant skills
An accountant skills section should carry twelve to sixteen entries in three groups: technical accounting, systems, and analysis. Systems deserve the most specificity.
What employers of accountants actually value
ONET, the U.S. Department of Labor's occupational database, ranks Reading Comprehension, Active Listening, Critical Thinking, Writing, Mathematics, Speaking, Active Learning and Monitoring as the highest-rated skills for accountants and auditors (ONET OnLine, 13-2011.00, 2025).
The technologies it flags as in demand are worth naming precisely: Intuit QuickBooks, SAP, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle PeopleSoft, Workday, Tableau and structured query language (SQL).
Technical accounting: US GAAP, Revenue recognition (ASC 606), Lease accounting (ASC 842), Multi-entity consolidation, Intercompany eliminations, Foreign currency translation, Fixed assets and depreciation, Accruals and prepaids, SOX 404 controls, Audit preparation and defence
Systems: NetSuite, SAP S/4HANA, QuickBooks Online, Workday Financials, Bill.com, Concur, FloQast, Avalara
Analysis: Excel (index-match, Power Query, pivot modelling), SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Variance and flux analysis
Excel deserves a specific claim rather than a bare mention. "Excel" appears on every accounting resume ever submitted; "Excel: Power Query, index-match, three-statement modelling" is a differentiator that survives an interview question.
Name every system exactly as the vendor writes it (NetSuite, SAP S/4HANA, Sage Intacct, Workday Financials, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central), because a hiring manager reads your ERP as a start-date decision. Make a specific Excel claim such as Power Query, index-match and three-statement modelling, and name the standards you have actually applied: ASC 606, ASC 842, SOX 404, multi-currency consolidation.
Do not write "detail-oriented" or "team player"; every competing accountant resume claims both and neither is evidence. Do not write "accounting software" or "ERP systems" when the posting names a product; that reads as "not the one we run". Do not name a client, disclose a confidential figure, or describe a specific audit finding that could identify an engagement; use portfolio ranges instead.
List the education that elevates your candidacy
For accountants, education is a licensure record. State your degree, your total credit hours if you are on the CPA path, your licence state and number if you hold one, and your CPE currency.
The 150-hour requirement is a screening criterion in its own right, and candidates who omit their credit total get filtered out of CPA-track roles by hiring managers who assume they do not meet it.
State exactly where you are on the CPA path
"CPA candidate" tells a hiring manager nothing they can plan around. "CPA candidate, 150 credit hours complete, 3 of 4 sections passed (FAR, REG, AUD), REG scheduled March 2027" tells them precisely when you become licensed and lets them slot you into a role that requires it.
If you hold the licence, list state, number and status: "Texas CPA #087214, active, 40 CPE hours current." Firms verify this and a page they can verify without emailing you moves faster.
The same precision applies to other credentials: CMA, CIA, CFE and EA each screen for different roles, and listing the one that matches the posting is worth more than listing all four.
Licensure: Texas CPA #087214, active, 40 CPE hours current through 2026
Master of Science in Accounting, University of Texas at Dallas, Richardson, TX, 2018. 150 credit hours complete
Bachelor of Business Administration, Accounting, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, 2016
Certifications: Certified Management Accountant (CMA, IMA, 2023), NetSuite Certified Administrator (2024)
Choose the right accountant resume layout and design
One page under seven years of experience, two pages beyond it, single column, standard typeface at 10.5 to 12 point. Controllers, CFOs and public accounting partners should use two pages and fill them with scope.
Keep a single-column layout with plain headings so the parser reads your CPA line and systems block correctly. State the revenue size and entity count of every employer, because that is how a controller calibrates whether you can handle their environment. Name each ERP exactly as the vendor writes it. Save as PDF unless the posting asks for .docx, and name the file yourself, for example elena-vasquez-cpa-senior-accountant-resume.pdf.
Do not write "detail-oriented"; every competing accountant resume claims it and none of them evidence it; show a zero-exception reconciliation record instead. Do not name a client, disclose a confidential figure, or reference a specific audit finding that could identify an engagement. Do not list "ERP systems" or "accounting software" generically when the posting names a product. Do not use tables, icons, charts or two-column layouts, which parse badly and waste the space your numbers need.

Accountant job market and outlook
Accounting is a large occupation with modest growth and very high replacement demand, which produces a reliable openings stream year after year.

| Projected change, 2024-34 | +5% (+72,800 positions) |

Where accountants work, and what those settings pay:
| Industry | Share of employment | Median annual wage (May 2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services | 23% | $80,510 |
| Finance and insurance | 8% | $87,980 |
| Government | 8% | $81,120 |
| Management of companies and enterprises | 6% | $86,010 |
| Self-employed | 5% | not reported |

BLS attributes the growth to globalisation, a growing economy and a complex tax and regulatory environment, which is a useful signal for what to put on the page. Regulatory complexity is the demand driver, so evidence that you have handled complexity is the highest-value content you can add: multi-entity consolidation, multi-currency, SOX, revenue recognition under ASC 606, lease accounting under ASC 842, state and local tax exposure across jurisdictions. Each one is a line that a straightforward bookkeeping resume cannot claim.
What salary you can expect as an accountant
The median annual wage for accountants and auditors was $81,680 as of May 2024 (BLS), with setting medians running from $80,510 in public accounting services to $87,980 in finance and insurance.
Three resume levers move you within that range. The CPA licence, which is the largest single credential differential in the field and should be visible in the header rather than on page two. The systems you name, because an accountant who is productive on the employer's existing ERP in week two is worth more than one who is productive in month two. And the size of what you have owned, entity count, revenue supported, transaction volume, which is how hiring managers place you in a band before an interview happens.

Key takeaways for building an accountant resume
- Put your CPA status in the header, directly after your name: licensed, or exactly how many sections you have passed.
- Give systems their own block and name each ERP exactly as the vendor writes it, because that is a scheduling decision for the hiring manager.
- State the revenue size and entity count of every employer so a controller can calibrate your environment instantly.
- Replace process descriptions with volume, cycle time and accuracy figures: reconciliations owned, close days, audit adjustments.
- List your total credit hours if you are on the CPA path, since the 150-hour rule is a screening criterion on its own.
- Never name a client or disclose a confidential figure; describe portfolio scale in ranges instead.
- Delete "detail-oriented" and prove it with a zero-exception record instead.
Build your accountant resume in 15 minutes with a layout that parses correctly the first time.
Accountant resume questions, answered
How long should an accountant resume be?
One page under seven years of experience, two pages beyond that. Controllers, finance directors and public accounting partners should use the second page and fill it with scope: entity counts, revenue supported, team size, audit history. Keep CPA status and your systems block in the top third of page one regardless of length.
Should I put my CPA on my resume if I am not licensed yet?
Yes, stated precisely. Write which sections you have passed, how many credit hours you have completed, and when your remaining exams are scheduled. Hiring managers plan around exam timelines and treat a specific status as a positive; a blank where CPA progress should be gets read as no progress at all.
What skills should an accountant put on a resume?
Split them into technical accounting, systems and analysis. Name standards you have actually applied (ASC 606, ASC 842, SOX 404, multi-entity consolidation) rather than listing "GAAP" alone, and name each ERP exactly as the vendor writes it. Make a specific Excel claim, such as Power Query and index-match, because bare "Excel" appears on every competing resume.
How do I quantify accounting work on a resume?
Use the units the work already produces: number of entities closed, close cycle in business days, count of reconciliations owned, transaction or invoice volume, audit adjustments proposed, days sales outstanding, dollar value of exceptions or recoveries found, and the revenue size of the business you support. Each is verifiable and none of them requires disclosing confidential detail.
How do I write an accountant resume with no experience?
Lead with credit hours and CPA progress, then treat internships, bookkeeping work, VITA tax volunteering and accounting coursework projects as experience with the same units attached: invoices processed, accounts reconciled, returns prepared, entities handled. Name every system you have touched, including QuickBooks and Excel at a specific level, since software readiness is what entry-level hiring screens on.
Is a resume different for public accounting versus industry?
Yes. Public accounting resumes emphasise client portfolio range, engagement types, hours under busy-season conditions and technical research; industry resumes emphasise close cycle ownership, entity count, systems and process improvement. If you are moving from public to industry, translate client work into scope and lead with the close and consolidation experience the hiring controller is actually buying.
