Application for Assistant Professor, Developmental Psychology

Dear Professor Reyes and members of the search committee,

I am applying for the Assistant Professor position in Developmental Psychology advertised in the APS Observer. I completed my PhD at the University of Michigan in August 2021 and am currently in my fourth year on the tenure track at Ohio State, where I direct the Early Cognition Laboratory.

My research asks how bilingual preschoolers allocate attention during joint reading, and what that allocation predicts about later literacy. The four-year longitudinal study I run, funded by a $412,000 NSF CAREER award, follows 240 children across three sites, and the first wave has produced two papers, in Developmental Science and Child Development. The finding that has shaped the next stage of the work is that attention allocation predicts vocabulary growth more strongly than total reading time, which reframes an intervention literature built almost entirely on duration.

The next phase extends the cohort into second grade and adds a classroom component, which is the part your department is unusually well placed to support. Your Child Development Center gives access to a longitudinal preschool sample I could not assemble elsewhere, and Professor Lindqvist's work on phonological awareness addresses the mechanism my data can describe but not yet explain. I would want to build that collaboration in my first year.

I teach PSY 2300 Developmental Psychology as instructor of record, with enrolments between 60 and 110 and a mean evaluation of 4.6 of 5 across 312 students, and a doctoral seminar in cognitive development. I rebuilt the undergraduate course around three low-stakes writing assignments after finding that a single high-stakes paper was concentrating failure in first-generation students. I would be glad to teach your methods sequence, and I could develop the bilingual development elective your course list does not currently cover.

Enclosed are my CV, teaching philosophy, research statement and a writing sample. Three letters will arrive separately through Interfolio. I would welcome the chance to talk further, and I am available for interviews throughout the autumn.

Sincerely, Yuki Tanaka, PhD

Summary

An academic cover letter runs one to two pages, is read by people who do your job, and argues for fit with one department rather than summarising your CV. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, what to move between a research university and a community college, and the mistakes that end a candidacy.

College Professor cover letter examples by experience level

An academic cover letter is one to two pages, read by a committee of people who do your job, and its argument is fit with one department. Not your accomplishments, which are already in the CV they are holding.

It is also the longest cover letter you will ever write, and the only one where a single page can read as thin.

Guide to an academic cover letter

This guide and the corresponding college professor cover letter example will cover:

  • How an academic cover letter is structured and how long it runs
  • What changes between a research university, a liberal arts college and a community college
  • How to write the research paragraph and the teaching paragraph
  • The department-fit paragraph, which is what actually decides shortlists
  • The mistakes that end a candidacy rather than costing a line

How long, and how it is structured

One page for a community college or a teaching-focused post, two for a research university. Under a page reads as having little to say; over two reads as not knowing the convention.

ParagraphIts jobResearch postTeaching post
OpeningThe position, your status, and your degree timing2 to 3 sentences2 to 3 sentences
ResearchThe question, the contribution, and what is next2 paragraphs1 short paragraph
TeachingCourses taught, approach, and evidence1 paragraph2 paragraphs
Department fitTheir courses, their colleagues, their facilities, named1 paragraph1 paragraph

Reverse research and teaching for a teaching-focused institution. Same material, different order, and committees read the order as a statement about what you want.

Expert Tip

The fit paragraph is what decides shortlists

Every applicant in the pile has a PhD and publications. What separates the longlist from the shortlist is whether the committee can see you in their department specifically.

Name their courses by number where you can, name a colleague whose work yours would sit beside and say how, name the facility or dataset or centre you would use. "I am drawn to your department's commitment to excellence" is the sentence that gets a letter set down. It appears in most of them.

What the shape of the profession means for your letter

Statistical insight

Most of the posts you answer are not tenure-track

About 68% of faculty members in US colleges and universities held contingent appointments in fall 2023, against 32% in full-time tenured or tenure-track posts. In 1987 the split was 47% to 53% (AAUP, Data Snapshot: Tenure and Contingency in US Higher Education, fall 2023).

Meanwhile the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 1,378,200 postsecondary teaching jobs in 2025 and projects 7% growth through 2035, with about 103,300 openings a year.

Both facts should change your letters. Most applications you send will be for non-tenure-track or teaching-focused posts, and a letter that leads with research at a community college is read as someone waiting for a better offer. Keep two versions and be honest with yourself about which one you are sending.

What changes by institution type

Do

At a research university, lead with the research programme and say what the next grant is. At a liberal arts college, lead with teaching and undergraduate research supervision, and name the courses you could take over from their existing list. At a community college, lead with teaching load capacity, developmental and introductory course experience, and evidence with students who arrive underprepared. Name their courses by number wherever the catalogue lets you.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not send a research-first letter to a teaching institution, which is the most common reason a strong candidate is passed over there. Do not name a colleague without saying specifically how your work meets theirs, since a name with no argument attached reads as a search-and-replace. Do not describe the department back to itself from its own homepage. Do not mention a two-body problem, a partner's job or a location preference in the letter; those are offer-stage conversations and raising them early has cost people interviews.

Format and sending it

One inch margins, 11 or 12 point, department letterhead if you have it and plain if you do not. PDF, named yourself: tanaka-yuki-cover-letter-developmental.pdf.

Address it to the search chair by name where the ad gives one, and to "members of the search committee" where it does not. Never "To whom it may concern".

Pair it with the CV that carries the same record. Our college professor CV example uses the same appointments, publications and teaching data, so the two documents agree with each other.

Key takeaways for an academic cover letter

  1. One page for a teaching post, two for a research post; under a page reads as thin.
  2. The department-fit paragraph decides shortlists, so name courses, colleagues and facilities specifically.
  3. Reverse the research and teaching order for a teaching-focused institution.
  4. Give teaching evidence in the same units your CV uses: course numbers, enrolments, evaluations.
  5. Say what the next stage of the research needs, not only what the last one found.
  6. List the enclosed documents and say how the letters are arriving.
  7. Keep partner, location and two-body conversations for the offer stage.

Academic cover letter questions, answered

How long should an academic cover letter be?

Two pages for a research university, one for a community college or a teaching-focused post. This is the one kind of cover letter where a single page can read as insufficient, because the committee expects a real account of your research programme and your teaching.

Who do I address an academic cover letter to?

The search chair by name if the advertisement gives one, otherwise "Dear members of the search committee". Never "To whom it may concern", and never "Dear Sir or Madam". If the ad names a chair, use their correct title, which for most will be Professor rather than Mr or Ms.

Should I mention my partner or family situation?

No, not in the letter. Two-body problems, relocation and family circumstances are offer-stage conversations. Raising them in an application has cost candidates interviews, and none of it belongs in a document read by a committee assessing fit.

How do I write one as an ABD candidate?

State your defence date precisely in the opening paragraph, because a department hiring for September needs to know the degree will be in hand. Then treat the dissertation as your research programme: the question, the contribution, and the two papers it will produce. Independent teaching experience carries more weight than a thin publication list at most institutions.

What if I am applying to a teaching institution from a research background?

Reorder the letter so teaching leads, and make the case explicitly rather than hoping it is inferred. Name their courses, describe what you would do with a 4-4 load, and give evidence with the kind of students they actually enrol. A letter that reads as a research letter with teaching appended is the clearest signal that you would leave.
