Put the license and the state in the first sentence
An owner opening your letter has one question: whether you can legally stand behind a chair in their state on the day they need you.
Answer it first. "I hold an Idaho cosmetologist license, #ID-COS-118472, and a Washington cosmetologist license at 1,600 board-approved hours" is checkable in one search, and almost nobody writes it.
If you are still waiting on a board, say so with a date. "Idaho application submitted August 2026, Washington license current" tells an owner how to plan; silence tells them to move to the next file.

I can start on two weeks' notice.
At Basalt Salon and Nail Studio I run about 34 services a week across cutting, single and double-process color, blow-dry finishing, gel manicures and body waxing. The part I would most want to bring with me is the book: I arrived with 38 named clients and now have 214, and last year 61 percent of them rebooked before leaving the chair. I took on the salon's corrective color work from 2023, roughly two appointments a week, and I wrote the color formulation record the floor now completes for every double-process client.
I noticed Foothills Grove added evening hours on Thursdays and that your nail room runs four days rather than six. Thursdays suit me, and I would be glad to cover the nail room on the manicurist license on the days it is closed, which would let you take bookings you are currently turning away. What counts as evidence when nothing is tracked
Plenty of salons count nothing beyond the till. That is a reason to count something yourself for a month before you apply, not a reason to write a letter with no numbers in it.

Every line there is yours. None of it needs a reporting system, and none of it is an industry average an owner would dispute.
Writing across a state line
This is where cosmetology letters go wrong, because applicants describe their training instead of their standing with the board that matters.
Hours do not move between states. Washington requires a minimum of 1,600 school hours for a cosmetologist license; California requires 1,000 hours of practical and technical instruction for the same license title (Washington State Department of Licensing and California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, both retrieved 17 September 2026). Neither board counts the other's clock. What can move is the license: BLS notes that under state reciprocity agreements, licensed manicurists and pedicurists may be able to get a license in another state without completing an additional program or passing that state's exam (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, published 27 August 2026).
So when you are moving, say which board has you now and where you stand with the board where the job is.
Do
- Name the license and the issuing state in the first sentence.
- Give the license number; it is public and makes you easy to verify.
- Say the date you can start.
- If you are mid-application in the new state, give the month you filed.
- Name any second license you hold, because coverage is what small salons lack.
Don’t
- Do not write "licensed in cosmetology"; no board issues a license in a field.
- Do not give an hours figure with no board attached.
- Do not claim a service that sits under a license you do not hold.
- Do not promise reciprocity you have not confirmed with the board.
- Do not open with how long you have loved doing hair.
The hiring market is openings, not growth
Barbers, hairstylists and cosmetologists held 670,800 jobs in 2025, with employment projected to grow 7 percent through 2035, adding 48,400 jobs and producing about 80,300 openings a year. Manicurists and pedicurists held 201,800 jobs, projected to grow 9 percent, adding 18,600 jobs with about 21,900 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections, published 27 August 2026).
Most of those openings are replacements rather than new chairs, which is why timing beats polish here. Owners are covering a schedule, not running a season-long search.
So carry a date. "I can start on two weeks' notice" does more work than a paragraph about your standards, because it answers the question that made the owner open the folder.
Length, format and sending it

Address a person. Owners are named on their own booking page and on the door, so "Dear Hiring Manager" reads as a letter sent to twelve salons the same afternoon.
